Who or what is restraining the rise of the Anti Christ?In 2 Thessalonians 2:5–7, Paul reminds the Thessalonians about something he had already taught them: there is a restraining power preventing the full revelation of the man of lawlessness until God's appointed time.But who is the Restrainer?In this message, we work through the various interpretations that have been suggested over the years, including government, angels...particularly Michael, the Church, the Holy Spirit and other possibilities. Rather than simply telling you what to believe, we look at some practical principles for studying Scripture and allow the grammar, immediate context and wider biblical context to help us reach a conclusion.As these pieces come together, the most logical conclusion is that the Holy Spirit works through the Church as the Restrainer. Some consider why Paul doesn't simply say "the Holy Spirit." Throughout Scripture, the Holy Spirit is frequently identified by the role He performs, such as Comforter, Helper, Advocate and Spirit of Truth among many others. Since Paul had already taught the Thessalonians about these things, this passage functions as a review of what they already knew.But understanding the identity of the Restrainer isn't merely an exercise in prophecy.Paul reminds us that the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Its full expression will eventually come through the Anti Christ, but God's people have a present role to play. We are called to be salt and light, restraining the influence of evil rather than believing that we are responsible for eliminating evil from the world.And there is great hope in knowing that God's people will not be present to witness the full outworking of this coming rebellion. God remains sovereign, His plan is unfolding exactly as He intends, and ultimately Christ wins.The question for us is not simply, "Who is the Restrainer?" but "Am I faithfully restraining evil and shining the light of Christ while I still have the opportunity?"Scripture: 2 Thessalonians 2:5–7
