Challenging Ourselves to be Missionaries

In The Iliad by Homer, Cassandra had the gift of prophecy, but no one heeded her warnings and eventually Troy succumbed to the Greeks. Similarly, prophet Amos was rejected and asked by Amaziah to leave and go back to Judah because he criticised the societal corruption and unjust practices in Northern Israel and even foretold their destruction; at a time when Israel was prosperous and powerful. Outwardly, Israel was safe and prosperous; but inwardly, there was malignant corruption- greed of the wealthy, corruption of the powerful, abuse inflicted on the poor, needy and vulnerable. Aren’t these happening in our world today? We may have countless gadgets, appliances and technology to make our lives better, but perhaps we are becoming more isolated, individualistic, and indifferent to the plight of others? Like the apostles, we have been sent out as missionaries to spread the good news. We are to live simply, travel lightly, and not hoard for tomorrow, depriving others of the basic things that they need today. Like Cassandra, like the prophet Amos, we may be rejected. The good news may be too hard for some to bear because it challenges their hearts, their lifestyles, asking them to change. We have to carry on even when people turn us away, we should just walk away and move on with the good news. Do not carry a speck of resentment or bitterness or anger. Bring life, health, freedom, healing, forgiveness to the people we meet. Bring the good news, whether they accept it or not. It is God that will touch or change their lives. -Sunday Homily by Fr.
