Changing Supports as Children Age: a Candid Conversation with Sandra Flach

from Living with FASD · host Patricia Kasper

Welcome back to Living with FASD: Candid Conversations with Patti Kasper. First, a note to my listeners. I accidentally recorded to the Zoom Cloud, rather than my computer, and for some reason unknown to me, the audio file could not be loaded to create the episode... so elements you have become accustomed to in the first 7 episodes (show intro, transition music, guest intro, candid conversation, transition music, parting comments) - not planned for as I had not anticipated uploading the video file of the interview. All that to say, you truly are getting a Candid Conversation! Unedited, unpolished, real and raw. This week, I welcome Sandra Flach to Living with FASD: Candid Conversations with Patti Kasper. Sandra Flach is mom of 8 children, 5 through adoption—2 diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. She encourages and equips foster and adoptive parents through her weekly Adoption & Foster Care Journey Podcast and blogs at SandraFlach.com. She is a certified facilitator of the FASCETS Neurobehavioral Model, teaches FASD workshops, and co-leads the Hope for the FASD Journey online support community. Sandra is co-founder of Justice For Orphans and author of Orphans No More—A Journey Back to the Father. She and her husband Wayne have been married 36 years. They reside in upstate NY where they love to spend time with family, especially their 8 grand children. Sandra and I talk at length about FASCETS Neurobehavioral Model and the importance of having a framework of understanding the unique impacts each person has from their prenatal brain injury. While I had never realized I was neuro-"divergent," throughout my life, she had lacked the framework for understanding her children diagnosed with FASD. Both of us found that learning how to map out the unique impacts has lead to greater compassion and understanding, either for self or for a loved one. Full disclosure: both Sandra and I are Certified Facilitators of the FASCETS Neurobehavioral Model. Sandra and I discuss how the Neurobehavioral Model enables tailored work-arounds/accommodations, as well as how she continues to use it to adapt the way they support their children as they transition to adulthood. Let me know what you think of this episode, either at [email protected] or in our community on Facebook: Living With FASD. (https://www.facebook.com/groups/livingwithfasdpodcast). Do you prefer the real and raw Candid Conversation like today? Or do you prefer the slightly more polished audio only, like the first 7 episodes? Please let me know! Starting this week, the podcast is also in video format! www.YouTube.com/@PatriciaKasperYourFASDCoach #FASD #fasdawareness #livingwithFASD #livingwithfasdpodcast #neurodiversity #neurodiversityacceptance #neurodivergent #neurodivergence #inclusionmatters #neurobehavioralmodel #FASCETS #stopthestigma
