CHAPTER 23: EDUCATION AND TRANSMISSION - TALMUD TORAH
from Judería medieval Zaragoza/Jewish quarter Zaragoza
CHAPTER 23: EDUCATION AND TRANSMISSION - TALMUD TORAH Direction and Production: Javier Bona López Chapter 23 explores the educational system of the Jewish quarter of Zaragoza, a fundamental pillar of its identity and survival. The narrative, led by Shelomó ibn Gabirol, reveals that education was not a privilege, but the engine of the community, driven by the institution of the Talmud Torah. This social justice organization (Tzedakah), active from the year thirteen eleven until the Expulsion of fourteen ninety-two, guaranteed universal religious literacy by covering the costs for humble families. The teaching took place in the network of synagogues, especially in the Bet Ha-Midrash ("House of Study"), and in the Yeshivá (center of higher studies), with a curriculum that ranged from the Mikra (literacy and Torah) to the Gemara/Talmud (dialectics and critical analysis), also integrating secular disciplines such as astronomy, mathematics, and medicine. The educational system had a clear gender demarcation. While boys received a formal and public education based on Talmudic debate, girls were intensively trained at home, becoming the main transmitters of faith, oral tradition, and family rites. This dual structure, which combined reason and emotion, was the key to the success of the Zaragoza model. The Jewish quarter was an epicenter of the "Renaissance of letters" in the 11th and 12th centuries, the cradle of sages such as Bahya ibn Paquda, Shelomó ibn Gabirol, Hasdai Crescas, and Yehudá Halevi, whose intellectual legacy shaped universal Jewish thought. From the 14th century onwards, the pressure of the Church and the Inquisition threatened this system, which culminated in the Edict of Expulsion of 1492. However, the "Zaragozan style" of study, a unique blend of Talmudic rigor and philosophical depth, survived in the Sephardic diaspora, leaving an indelible mark on history.
