Chico Mendes Botanical Garden
from Audio guide de Santos-SP Hosted by Seectur-Santos
Walking through the Chico Mendes Botanical Garden, the feeling is of discovering a vast green refuge where nature and leisure coexist in harmony. Located in the Bom Retiro neighborhood, the space occupies approximately ninety thousand square meters and brings together a living collection with more than three hundred plant species organized into collections that highlight the richness of the Atlantic Forest and other Brazilian biomes. Its history began in 1925, when it was still the Municipal Nursery responsible for producing seedlings to arborize the city. Transferred to this land in 1973 and transformed into a botanical garden in 1994, the site began to dedicate itselfto environmental conservation, education, and connecting people with the natural world. Among tranquil avenues, woods, palm trees, and three lakes that attract birds and invite contemplation, visitors find spaces to walk, observe, and slow down. More than a park, the Botanical Garden is an invitation to perception: to feel theenvironment, to notice the shapes and colors of the plants, and to recognize the importance of biodiversity in the midst of an urban setting. Here, each path reveals that learning, preserving, and simply being in contact with nature can be part of the same experience.
