Chosen Shepherds and Connected Branches: 1 Samuel 16–17 and John 15 (Day 145)

from The Bible in a Year Podcast with Scott Purcell

What does God look for when He searches a human heart? Today we step into one of the most famous transitions in biblical history. In 1 Samuel, the prophet Samuel is sent to Bethlehem to anoint a new king. While human eyes focus entirely on outward appearance, God delivers a timeless standard: "The Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart." We watch as David, a simple shepherd boy, is anointed. This heart for God is immediately put to the test as David steps up to face the giant Goliath while the rest of the army is paralyzed by fear.In the Gospel of John, Jesus uses a powerful, organic image to explain how we cultivate that exact kind of heart. He reveals Himself as the True Vine and describes His followers as the branches. Our spiritual success doesn't depend on our striving, but on our connection—abiding in Him to produce fruit that lasts.Today’s Scripture:📖 1 Samuel 16:1–17:37 – Samuel travels to Bethlehem to meet the sons of Jesse. Bypassing the oldest seven brothers, young David is brought from the pastures and anointed. The Spirit of the Lord rushes upon David, while an harmful spirit torments Saul. Chapter 17 takes us to the Valley of Elah, where the giant Goliath terrorizes Israel. David arrives with provisions, hears the giant's blasphemies, and volunteers to fight him, trusting the God who delivered him from lions and bears.📖 John 15:1–16:4 – In the Upper Room, Jesus delivers the "Vine and Branches" discourse, emphasizing that apart from Him, we can do nothing. He defines true love as laying down one's life for friends and explicitly warns the disciples that because they belong to Him, the world will hate and persecute them.📖 Psalm 67:1–7 – A beautiful global prayer for blessing, echoing the Aaronic blessing: "May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us." The psalmist prays that God's ways may be known across the earth and that all nations would sing for joy.RESOURCES & READ-ALONG 📺 Watch on YouTube: 📖 Follow the Text (LEB): 🗓️ Download the Full Plan:CONNECT & SUPPORT 📧 Questions?
