City to unveil new ‘gateway’ mural as part of anti-graffiti beatification project
from KYW Newsradio Audio On-Demand
This mural was too big to hide. You've already seen it if you've been on the Schuylkill Expressway between Girard and Spring Garden. But on Tuesday, this signature project of the Gateways to Philadelphia campaign will be officially unveiled. Mayor Parker will do the honors from the Water Works, a fine vantage point for what was the heavily graffitied CSX/Amtrak wall. Now, it's painted with "From Philly with Love," "One Philly, A United City," and symbols including the Liberty Bell and the William Penn statue atop City Hall. The city calls it a "transformative, 250th-themed mural" that celebrates "Philadelphia’s unique urban fabric and role in the nation’s history." Mural Arts says it's one of the "most complex and ambitious projects" it has ever undertaken. (Photo credit: Office of Clean and Green)
