Un 12 de agosto de 1943 nació Clara Nunes, cantante afrobrasileña, considerada una de las más grandes de su generación. Nunes, se convirtió en la primera cantante femenina en Brasil en vender más de 100.000 copias y sus logros en el género de la samba le valieron el título de "Reina de la samba". Tuvo un enorme éxito con canciones escritas por compositores como Nelson Cavaquinho, Paulinho da Viola y Chico Buarque, además de canciones dedicadas a los orishas y Portela, su escuela de samba favorita. Nunes también fue investigadora de los ritmos y el folclore de la música popular brasileña, y viajó varias veces a África en busca de las raíces de la música negra. Familiarizada con las danzas y tradiciones afrobrasileñas, se convirtió al Umbanda en sus últimos años. Hoy escucharemos en la voz de Clara Nunes la pieza Feira de Mangaio compuesta por Sivuca y su esposa Glorinha Gadêlha.
