Cobra (1986) Vintage Cinema Review - Old Man Orange Podcast 676
from Old Man Orange Podcast · host Spencer Scott Holmes and Ryan Dunigan.
Spencer and Josh are going back to the ultra macho, 80s action flick, Cobra. Sylvester Stallone's 1986 vehicle to compete with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the battle of the action heroes. Directed by George P. Cosmatos of Rambo 2 and Tombstone fame, along with Stallone writing the script. Based off the novel Fair Game. This movie is almost an artistic display of action with some top notch cinematography, lighting, and editing here. It's about as 80s as it can get when Brigitte Nielsen (Red Sonja) is taking model photos in a montage scene that could rival a Rocky flick, all while having a bunch of Robots stand behind her. The story is in that Dirty Harry meets the Punisher kind of one-man lawman all about a woman who escapes a crime scene and knows who the cult of New World killers is and it's up to Cobra to be here witness protection. Simple premise and right to the point without any needed wasted fluff added in. Even if it's got some goofy scenes (that really only add to the overall enjoyment) it's filled with all kinds of great action moments that one should expect from Sly.Too bad no one has put together an extended cut, beyond the TV cuts extra scenes. Because this is another one of those films from the era that had to get trimmed down from an X rating to an R. But nowadays with all the Directors, extended, and unrated cuts of films, I do really wish someone would put movies like Cobra back with all the extra violence and so on. Even if it is just for film buffs to indulge in. But whatever, it's still a great piece of action movie history. Join us as we break it all down in this spoiler-filled discussion!
