In this chapter, Paul calls believers to shift their focus from earthly things to heavenly realities and to live out their new identity in Christ. He writes in Colossians 3:1–2, “So if you have been raised with the Messiah, seek what is above, where the Messiah is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on what is above, not on what is on the earth.” He goes on to describe the transformation that takes place when we put off the old self and put on the new: “Therefore, put to death what belongs to your worldly nature… But now you must also put away all the following: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth” (Colossians 3:5, 8).
