Common Man Airwaves: Homeschooling: The Law, the Myths and What Parents Need to Know

In this episode, I revisit our homeschooling theme by breaking down the legal position in England for parents considering home education. I walk through what currently applies: when you do and do not need council permission, the fact that you are not required to follow the National Curriculum, how deregistration from school works, what councils can ask, and some of the most common myths around home visits, timetables and exams. I also flag the proposed legal changes passed on 29 April 2026 that had not yet come into force at the time of recording, so families understand what is changing now versus what may change later.I then hand over to Suk, who shares how he educated his own son after taking him out of school and why he believes parents should focus less on reproducing a broken curriculum and more on teaching children how to think, learn and build practical life skills. We explore the Trivium and Quadrivium, Dorothy Sayers’ famous essay on the “lost tools of learning”, logical fallacies, strengths-based development, and the value of tailoring education to a child’s interests — whether that means martial arts, survival skills, mechanics or entrepreneurship.
