从军行，是乐府旧题，写的大多是军旅生活。而这首《从军行》描写了一个读书士子希望从军边塞、参加战斗的愿望。唐高宗调露、永隆年间，吐蕃和突厥经常侵扰甘肃一带，唐朝礼部尚书裴行俭奉命出师征讨。而当时朝廷重武轻文，武官得宠，很多文官也只能写写诗发发牢骚，不过杨炯，应该是担忧国家兴亡，不愿再把青春年华消磨在笔砚之间了。
