Considering the Cinema Ep. 061: The DVD Infatuation Podcast: Six Pack - September 2022

from consideringthecinema's podcast

Considering the Cinema presents… The DVD Infatuation Podcast, starring Dave "Dr. Shock" Becker — "The Leonard Maltin of the Internet," the Amazing but Subtle One, the National Treasure himself. In this installment Dave continues the ongoing series called DVD Infatuation Showcase which will feature reviews of new and old films that he's been watching from his daunting, personal collection. For this series, Dave will be regularly joined by Nathan Bartlebaugh of the Phantom Galaxy podcast, as they cover the following segments: Six-Pack Movie Reviews: Every episode, Dave and Nathan will choose six films available on physical media and review them. This batch includes a wild French thriller that features full opera sequences and exciting motorbike chases through the subway, all in the same film; an epic WW2 saga featuring the collision of Peter O'Toole, Omar Shariff and Donald Pleasance; the surreal but fascinating Burt Lancaster starrer The Swimmer; Soldiers, aliens, Nazis and laser beams mix it up in Zone Troopers; A little girl sees Frankenstein for the first time and it changes her life in the film that inspired Pan's Labyrinth; and one of the weirdest adaptations of 'Island of Dr. Moreau' you've ever seen! Artist Spotlight: Dave and Nathan continue their series, "The Films of Nicholas Ray," with the experimental documentary film, "Lightning over Water" from 1979, which ends up being a final document of Ray's life and directing career. The film is a collaboration between Wenders and Ray, chronicling Ray's last days due to terminal cancer. The film is partially an homage to Ray who had a strong influence on Wenders' work and partially an investigation on life and death. The Year in Movies: Top 10 of 2001 Dave and Nathan take turns sharing their top 10 movies of 2001. Music in the Movies: Each host picks one song either specifically from or prominently featured in a movie. The DVD Infatuation Showcase is an intermittent release alongside the regular episode of DVD Infatuation, so watch for another installment in 2023! Dave Becker and Jason Pyles would like to offer a special thanks to Nathan Bartlebaugh, who recorded and produced this episode. Thanks for listening!
