Considering the Cinema Ep. 092: I Haven't Watched Them All. I Don't Think I Ever Will.
In this episode of Considering the Cinema, your hosts Jason Pyles (aka "Jay of the Dead") and Dave "Dr. Shock" Becker kick things off with a Feature Review of the documentary, Movie Hoarders: From VHS to DVD and Beyond (2021), a celebration of physical media collecting that feels tailor-made for cinephiles, collectors, and movie obsessives. Jason and Dave discuss the joys of movie collecting, video store nostalgia, the challenges of organizing massive collections, the enduring appeal of physical media, and the peculiar psychology behind buying movies you may never actually watch. Along the way, they share personal collecting stories, discuss rare and obscure titles, and reflect on the communal experience of movie watching that many feel has been lost in the streaming era. Then, in a special, BONUS segment, Mack Robins welcomes his 10-year-old son, Ford, to the podcast for a pair of family-friendly movie recommendations. Ford enthusiastically shares his thoughts on The Secret Garden (1993) and Alaska (1996), delivering heartfelt reviews that showcase both his love of movies and his budding podcasting skills. The result is a charming and surprisingly insightful discussion that reminds us why discovering movies together remains one of life's greatest pleasures. Listeners will also hear discussion about video stores, LaserDiscs, VHS collecting, Los Angeles movies, polar bears, Charlton Heston villains, movie-hoarding habits, and why Mack may have found his people in Movie Hoarders. Considering the Cinema Ep. 089: The DVD Infatuation Podcast – The Best Picture Podcast 4th Edition
At last, the long-dormant Best Picture Podcast rises again! For this special episode of The DVD Infatuation Podcast, host Dave "Dr. Shock" Becker is joined by Jason "Jay of the Dead" Pyles and filmmaker Mack "Mackula" Robins to revive a show that only released three episodes — many years ago now. In honor of the 98th Academy Awards tomorrow (March 15, 2026), the trio presents a long-overdue 4th Edition of The Best Picture Podcast, traveling back in time to revisit the 74th Academy Awards (held in 2002), celebrating the films of 2001. In this retrospective Oscars discussion, Dave, Jay, and Mack examine the five Best Picture nominees from that year: A Beautiful Mind (the eventual winner), Gosford Park, In the Bedroom, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, and Moulin Rouge! Along the way, they revisit the cultural moment of early-2000s cinema, discuss standout performances and filmmaking achievements, and debate which movie truly deserved the Academy's top honor. The conversation then expands beyond Best Picture as the hosts dig into the major categories of the 2002 Oscars, highlighting memorable wins, controversial snubs, and overlooked performances. From acting races and directing decisions to screenplay awards and technical categories, these film nerds explore what happened at the ceremony versus what they believe should have happened. Finally, each host answers a challenging question: If you could change only one thing about the 2002 Academy Awards, what would it be? Join us! Note: Regarding the episode artwork… Because the iconic Oscar statuette is copyright-protected, the artwork for this episode features a creative alternative: an Ai-generated golden statue inspired by Jennifer Connelly, honoring her Oscar-winning performance in A Beautiful Mind. Considering the Cinema Ep. 086: Considering the NY Times' 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century (and the year 2000)
In Episode 086 of Considering the Cinema, your hosts — Jason Pyles, Mack Robins, and Dave Becker — are Considering the New York Times' 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century (and the year 2000), a list that's bold, baffling, and sure to stir debate! But there's an odd twist … the Times seems to think the year 2000 is part of the 21st century (it's not), and Jason's co-hosts were not given advance notice about this episode's topic. That's right — Jason springs this mystery agenda on Mack and Dave in real time, creating an off-the-cuff episode that's unfiltered, unprepared, and unexpectedly insightful! Despite the surprise, your hosts charge headlong through the NYT list, highlighting the films that deserve to be there, calling out those that don't, and passionately lamenting the glaring omissions with an extensive list of oversights over their own at the end of the show. Jason also reveals what he believes to be "the most underrated, under-appreciated film of all time" — Mack is man enough to admit when he hasn't seen a well-known film — and Dave reveals that he doesn't give a damn about Jay's rules for the episode! This batch includes a wild French thriller that features full opera sequences and exciting motorbike chases through the subway, all in the same film; an epic WW2 saga featuring the collision of Peter O'Toole, Omar Shariff and Donald Pleasance; the surreal but fascinating Burt Lancaster starrer The Swimmer; Soldiers, aliens, Nazis and laser beams mix it up in Zone Troopers; A little girl sees Frankenstein for the first time and it changes her life in the film that inspired Pan's Labyrinth; and one of the weirdest adaptations of 'Island of Dr. Moreau' you've ever seen! Artist Spotlight: Dave and Nathan continue their series, "The Films of Nicholas Ray," with the experimental documentary film, "Lightning over Water" from 1979, which ends up being a final document of Ray's life and directing career. The film is a collaboration between Wenders and Ray, chronicling Ray's last days due to terminal cancer. The film is partially an homage to Ray who had a strong influence on Wenders' work and partially an investigation on life and death. The Year in Movies: Top 10 of 2001 Dave and Nathan take turns sharing their top 10 movies of 2001. Music in the Movies: Each host picks one song either specifically from or prominently featured in a movie. The DVD Infatuation Showcase is an intermittent release alongside the regular episode of DVD Infatuation, so watch for another installment in 2023! For this series, Dave will be regularly joined by Nathan Bartlebaugh of the Phantom Galaxy podcast, as they cover the following segments: Six-Pack Movie Reviews: Every episode, Dave and Nathan will choose six films available on physical media and review them. In future episodes, each host will choose three movies, but Dave picks the first six covered here. This batch includes a wild Western that may have been partially directed by Dario Argento; one of Elvis Presley's self-proclaimed favorite roles; a nearly 30-year-old Natalie Wood playing 15; a coke-addled Sherlock Holmes mixing it up with Sigmund Freud; Gene Tierney in the creepiest rowboat scene you're likely to see; and the film that prompted Martin Scorsese to seek out and cast Joe Pesci in Raging Bull! Artist Spotlight: Dave and Nathan continue their "The Films of Nicholas Ray" series with his 1956 tour de force "Bigger than Life," featuring James Mason as a school teacher struggling with the disastrous side effects of a life-saving miracle drug. Considering the Cinema Ep. 057: The DVD Infatuation Podcast – February 2022
Considering the Cinema presents… The DVD Infatuation Podcast, starring Dave "Dr. Shock" Becker — "The Leonard Maltin of the Internet," the Amazing but Subtle One, the National Treasure himself, as he welcomes special guest Matt Rawlings of Father and Son Watch Horror Movies podcast (as well as Matt's three puppies). During Episode 057, the topic is THE FILMS OF "THE DUKE," JOHN WAYNE. You will also get some inside info about Bruce Dern and many other inside scoop stories (that you've never heard before). Also, Matt does a very convincing John Wayne impersonation. You will hear a great story about "The Quiet Man" (1952), as well as the tale of when Dr. Shock fell in love with the film "The Shootist" (1976). Dave and Matt even mention a couple of John Wayne's worst movies. In this episode, Matt tells a story about the one time he was truly star-struck in L.A. … Which actor did he meet? Listen to find out! During this show, you can also hear which contemporary filmmaker Dave refers to as "a Modern-Day Hitchcock." And somehow, Dave and Matt even end up talking about "The Nail Gun Massacre" (1985) — not a John Wayne film, but maybe it should have been… Oh, and Dave tells the saddest story you've ever heard about the pre-VHS / home video era involving the movie "Superman" (1978). Episode 057 is a fascinating must-listen! The DVD Infatuation Podcast is a monthly release, so watch for Dave's March 2022 (18th Edition). Thanks for listening!
