This left behind large areas of deadly radiation, most of which still lingers today . Small pockets of manageable radiation allowed the survivors to gather, setting up conclaves of humanity .There were still resources outside of these Null Zones that were useful, and commodities that needed to be traded between communities. Someone needed to go into danger so everyone else could survive.
