They would play exhibition games in cities along the train route. In Asheville, NC the Babe’s hard living finally caught up with him. The winding tracks through the Smoky Mountains from Chattanooga took their toll and caused the Sultan of Swat to collapse on the train platform. If not for the quick reactions of catcher Steve O'Neill Ruth would have landed head first on the marble floor.
