They pulled Anthropic's Fable 5 model for safety, and it quietly made the locked-up enterprise version look priceless while erasing its only competitor. So here is the question that will not leave me alone: what if the danger is the marketing? In this one I recap the Fable 5 kill switch, the Mythos model that went to the banks, the jailbreak and the Amazon snitch, and the Her movie parallel of a tool people loved getting taken away overnight. Then the bigger idea: the whole "it is so dangerous and so amazing" narrative sells the same way scripted playoffs and if-it-bleeds-it-leads news sell. We also hit the climate-to-AI narrative switch and the railroad and dot-com parallel, where the original investors got crushed and the buyers who picked up the wreckage for pennies on the dollar got rich. Is AI the same, or does intelligence make it compound forever? Nobody knows. I close with where AI actually pays off inside a business: missed calls, dead databases, reviews, and after-hours customer service.
