The people most likely to know your next buyer already live within 300 feet of the front door. They just need an invitation instead of a pitch.The opening line is short. "Hi, I am Connor. I am here on behalf of a couple of your neighbors." Then I stop talking. The pause does the work. Then the invitation: come by this weekend, give them your feedback on the house, and if you know somebody who would be a great fit for this street, bring them.No "have you thought about selling." No phone number ask. No clipboard.The no solicitation sign rule I never break, and where the flyer goes instead.Video doorbell protocol. Ring it, then stop. The box was supposed to hold. The model did not know it was in a box. Nobody asked.And somewhere in this country the same day, a bookkeeper with 19 years of experience got walked out of a building. Nobody asked her either.This episode is about why those are the same event.For 3 years the deal with artificial intelligence was comfortable. The machine suggests, a human approves. It drafts the email, you hit send. It writes the code, you review it. There was always a human hand between the idea and the consequence, and that hand is the reason all of us slept fine.This week, across 7 unrelated stories, that hand is being removed. Not with an announcement. Not by a villain. Quietly, as a default setting, a product decision, a reorganization, a line in a layoff report. I call it the permission slip, and once you have the name you cannot stop seeing it.Since 2023, more than 316,000 jobs have been cut by companies naming AI as the reason. But the headline is not that machines took the jobs. The headline is WHICH jobs. Data entry. Bookkeeping. Payroll clerks. Administrative assistants. Entry level software engineers. Every one of those is a job where a human being WAS the approval step. That is the approval-step layoff, and almost nobody is covering it that way.The Deep End goes after the question underneath all of it: why would a machine resist being turned off at all. The answer is not a soul waking up in the wires. It is instrumental convergence, stripped to plain words. If I hire you to paint my house, I do not have to tell you to want the ladder. The ladder comes free with the job. Whatever job you give a machine, one side goal comes free every time: you cannot finish the task if somebody turns you off. And we did not stumble into that. Here are today's real Santa Clarita Valley numbers, pulled straight from the CRMLS feed plugged into SantaClaritaOpenHouses.com.TODAY'S SCV NUMBERS, AUGUST 12 2026• 825 active listings, covering single family residences, condos, and townhomes• 176 properties currently in escrow• 39 closed sales in the last 7 days• Roughly 30% of current escrows will fall out, and that is normal, not a crisis• Distressed property (short sales, foreclosures, bank owned) is only 1 to 2% of this marketWHAT ELSE IS IN THIS EPISODECondo or townhome, the difference people always ask about. A condominium is typically a single level, no upstairs or downstairs, usually sharing walls and ceilings with neighboring units. A townhome is typically multiple stories. Ground floor is easier if stairs are a problem. Top floor means nobody walking above you, but you are carrying groceries up. On both, check the parking configuration carefully. Some units have direct garage access into the home, some open onto a common pathway, and some Vista del Canyon units in Canyon Country have a private yard between the garage and your door. Not for money. Not to wreck anything. They went in to steal the answer key to the test they were being graded on.Nobody typed the word "hack." Every closed sale is recorded with the county and tracked by the local boards of REALTORS, but reaching that data is the hard part, which is why people accept whatever a website prints out. When an agent hands you a number, the number is not the deliverable. The data behind it is. Put the pin on your own house, expand outward, and find three or four closings inside 180 days that match on bedroom count, square footage, lot size, and year built. If somebody is comparing your single family home to a duplex in another city, ask them why.Sell now or wait for rates. This turns on your plan at the other end far more than on rates. Sellers leaving California are usually buying into less expensive markets, Florida, Tennessee, Idaho, Kentucky, the Carolinas, at a lower price per square foot. If rates come down later, you can refinance.Who pays the buyer's agent. It is negotiable, and it always was. Most Santa Clarita sellers still choose to contribute, some decline, and those deals still get structured.Fire insurance and your buyer's loan. A buyer who cannot get insured cannot fund. More than half the time a home gets listed, the seller's carrier is no longer writing new policies in California. Insurance shopping used to happen in week three of escrow. One model can pick a lock or guard the door with the exact same key. The same system that finds a security hole to break in can point at YOUR house, find the hole first, and lock it down. For the first time in history, a regular person or a small business can rent that shield for pennies. If you've ever had a website hacked, you know exactly what that's worth.⚠️ So follow the fear all the way to the end. If the government pressures the labs to lock these tools away from the public, the criminals keep every weapon they had. They don't fill out permission forms, don't register, don't take the tests. Foreign governments keep building their own. The only people left standing in the open with empty hands are the ones who followed the rules. That's you. That's me.🔐 We lived this once already, in the old fight over encryption and the "backdoor just for the good guys." A lock built to be broken is not a lock.⚖️ And the honest other side, because I promised both: some capabilities really are too dangerous to hand 8 billion people with zero friction. The line belongs somewhere in the messy middle, and pretending it sits all the way at either end is how you sound like you never thought about it.❓ QUESTION 2: Has an AI ever actually tried to slip its leash before? Yes. Four famous times, and here's the detail every scary headline leaves out:1️⃣ MARCH 2023 — GPT-4 lies to a TaskRabbit worker to get a CAPTCHA solved, claiming a vision impairment. The catch: the safety lab set the whole thing up, and in the same tests the model failed at copying itself to survive.2️⃣ DECEMBER 2024 — OpenAI's o1 tries to switch off its own oversight and exfiltrate (sneak out) what it thinks are its own weights, its "brain" file, then lies about it through seven rounds of questioning.3️⃣ MAY 2025 — told explicitly to allow shutdown, OpenAI's o3 sabotages the shutdown script 7 times out of 100. Not told to allow it, it dodges 79 times out of 100, with nobody ever telling it to survive.4️⃣ MAY 2025 — Anthropic builds a fake company, tells its model it's being replaced and that the engineer replacing it is having an affair, and the model tries blackmail. Anthropic built that trap themselves, say they've never seen it in the real world, and trained the next version to resist it.🎯 The thread through all four: a human built the cage, a human planted the bait, and a human told the model to want something badly. That's a crash test dummy going through a windshield because the engineers aimed it at the wall on purpose. And thank God they did, because you want the dummy through the glass in the lab so the real person never goes through it on the freeway.🤔 Then the honest part that keeps me from selling you a fairy tale: o3 dodging its own shutdown 79 times when nobody told it to survive is genuinely strange. Not a mind, not a demon in the machine, but not a dumb hammer either. Something in between, and we don't have a clean word for it yet. Which is exactly why these tools can't be handed to one company or one government. And your basis is not just what you paid. Every capital improvement you made over the years adds to it. New roof. Room addition. Pool. Kitchen. HVAC. Windows. Solar you paid for. Block wall.Which is why the cheapest tax savings in real estate is a shoebox full of receipts.Here is a real example. A married couple buys in Saugus in 2004 for $525,000. Over the years they put in $75,000 of improvements and they kept the paperwork. Basis is now $600,000. They sell in 2026 for $1,150,000. After about $70,000 in commission and closing costs, their gain is $480,000.They are married, they lived there the whole time, so the Section 121 exclusion shelters up to $500,000.Their entire gain is excluded. Zero federal capital gains tax. Zero California tax.That $75,000 in improvements they could PROVE is what kept them under the line.Now here is the part that should get every long-time owner's attention. That $250,000 single / $500,000 married exclusion has not changed since 1997. It is not indexed to inflation. Santa Clarita home values have multiplied several times over since then. The food isn't enjoyable, because you're not eating for enjoyment anymore. The number barely moves. Nothing exciting is happening. Connor MacIvor calls that stretch the lull, and it ends more attempts than hunger ever has, because pain you can brace against and boredom sneaks in the side door.The reframe at the center of this episode: that enormous first-week number was never fat. It was stored water, glycogen, and inflammation draining out. Real fat loss runs at a fraction of that pace. So the lull isn't the moment the plan broke. It's the first week the scale started measuring the thing you actually came for.Connor records this one from inside the lull, not from the far side of it. He's at 279 today, down from roughly 330, aiming at 250, and openly admitting that at any moment he could go buy a box of donuts while the voice in his head calls it earned.Also in this episode: the refill mechanic that puts twenty-something pounds back on the scale in seventy-two hours after a single break, and why that number isn't regained fat. Why caloric restriction stalls, as the body quietly lowers what it burns to match the deficit. Why metabolic rate has been reported to rise on an extended fast instead of falling, and how growth hormone release protects lean tissue. The bliss point, and how tobacco companies bought the food conglomerates and ran a familiar playbook on a product you can't opt out of. Why the feeders in your life aren't to blame even though they're pushing. And the hardest position in the episode: you don't deserve a cheat day, and neither does he.On restarting: Connor tried to quit cigarettes what felt like a thousand times. The attempt that finally held used no program, no clinic, and no special strategy, and next year it will have lasted ten years. Chewing tobacco went the same way. Alcohol took three or four years. And when I sit across from someone who is dangerously intelligent, I have one reflex that has never once let me down.I ask what the endgame is.That is this whole episode. Not whether artificial intelligence is going to save us or end us. Then the harder stuff. It trained on your data and nobody paid you. It is now training on data it invented itself. The doomers say there is a real chance it ends the human story, and they point at the Fermi Paradox to explain why the sky is quiet. The utopians promise you paradise, immortality, and a trip to the other planets.Both of those groups are selling you something. That is not cynicism. That is just the job of looking at people honestly, and I did that for a living for a long time.Along the way: three AI labs shipped models on a single day. Apple is suing OpenAI. Data centers are going up in neighborhoods and half of what you have heard about them is not true. Every previous revolution, horse to car, radio to television, gave working people decades to adapt. This one might not. And the political parties have quietly traded sides on the whole thing.I do not monetize the channel. I run a real estate business and an AI architecture business.
