Course One: The Calm Ritual

A single principle governs everything that follows: calm is the ground all dread is built on. Order is not the opposite of horror. Order is what horror requires in order to register at all. Begin in chaos and additional wrongness has nowhere to land; begin in procedure done correctly, with the composure of ten thousand mornings, and the first violation arrives against a surface that was, until that moment, right.Shirley Jackson understood this. In The Haunting of Hill House, her opening paragraph is not trying to frighten you — it is trying to arrange the world into perfect procedural order, so that everything which follows has something to derange. Take a horror scene of your own. Strip its opening. Rebuild it as pure calm ritual — the ordinary performed with care — and only then let one wrong thing enter.
