The difference was one part in a thousand, less than the disturbance of a butterfly's wing, and the weather that came back was not the weather he had left. The system obeyed every rule that governed it. It could not be predicted anyway. Determinism is not predictability, and the entire modern science of chaos walked in through that gap.Then an older proof, from a witness who claims to have stood closer than the histories record. A black horse no man could ride. A twelve year old who noticed the animal feared its own shadow. A turn toward the sun that carried an empire forty thousand stadia east and seeded the libraries of Alexandria. One boy. One observation. A single principle governs everything that follows: calm is the ground all dread is built on. Order is not the opposite of horror. Order is what horror requires in order to register at all. Begin in chaos and additional wrongness has nowhere to land; begin in procedure done correctly, with the composure of ten thousand mornings, and the first violation arrives against a surface that was, until that moment, right.Shirley Jackson understood this. In The Haunting of Hill House, her opening paragraph is not trying to frighten you — it is trying to arrange the world into perfect procedural order, so that everything which follows has something to derange. She did not invent the principle; she perfected it, and that precision is what makes her useful as a doorway.Here in Episode 2, we step through that doorway.
