Cracking Down on Human Trafficking and Other Notes from St. George

from Mornings with Brian Haldane · host Guaranty Broadcasting Company

Mayor Dustin Yates of St. George joins the show to discuss recent efforts to combat illicit massage parlors operating as fronts for human trafficking. While acknowledging that many legitimate massage businesses exist, Yates emphasized that several establishments in St. George were part of criminal networks trafficking women, often from overseas. Working with local and federal law enforcement, the city has shut down eight or nine such businesses, including four in a recent sweep. One voluntarily closed, and another is undergoing a permitting process. To prevent reopening, the city has taken measures like cutting off utilities, making it nearly impossible for these businesses to resume operations without city approval.Yates highlighted the broader issue of human trafficking along Louisiana’s I-10/I-12 corridor, noting that organizations like Metanoia Manor and Unbound are actively rescuing victims, including minors. He stressed the distinction between prostitution and trafficking, the latter involving victims held against their will through coercion, addiction, or manipulation—often by their own families. The mayor also addressed homelessness and panhandling on Seigan Lane. In partnership with Grove Recovery Center, Keep Tiger Town Beautiful, and extra-duty sheriff deputies, the city has made strides in cleaning up the area and connecting individuals to recovery and mental health services. Yates personally visited homeless camps, expressing compassion and a commitment to helping individuals reintegrate into society. The initiative has led to cleaner streets, reduced panhandling, and the arrest of several individuals with outstanding felony warrants. He acknowledged the challenges of addiction and mental illness but emphasized the importance of proactive engagement and community support.Yates concluded by affirming that these efforts are ongoing and collaborative, involving parish-wide coordination with leaders like Mayor-President Sid Edwards, aiming to create a safer, cleaner, and more compassionate community.
