La criopreservación, que consiste en conservar espermatozoides y óvulos a temperaturas extremadamente bajas, es común en humanos, animales y plantas, pero su eficacia varía entre especies. En aves, especialmente, congelar óvulos es complicado debido a su tamaño, demasiado grande para soportar la congelación sin deteriorarse, y la conservación de espermatozoides plantea problemas que se traducen en una baja tasa de fertilidad tras el proceso de congelación. La criopreservación en pollos es útil para la industria y como modelo para la conservación de animales ovíparos como pavos, patos, flamencos, pingüinos y tortugas.
