Critical Conversations: Too Many RODS, not enough LANGUAGE.. Are we talking to our children enough?

The Bible clearly says in Proverbs 13:24 Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him. What does that passage mean? Are we taking that to the extreme and inflicting excessive violence on children and not having conversations concerning acceptable/unacceptable behavior? I survived it, but yet some of the implications of the excessiveness is still with me. Are we putting the anger we have for the world on our children in that moment? When does it turn into abuse?
