Imaginad por un momento a un grupo de cazadores que, después de la jornada de caza durante la cual han abatido un conjunto de animales de gran tamaño, se reúne a la orilla de un lago para trocearlos, separar la carne y la piel y favorecer así su transporte. Hecho el despiece, los cazadores abandonan el lugar y dejan atrás cuchillos y otras herramientas utilizadas, así como los huesos y restos de los animales que han sido descarnados. Ahora imaginad que nadie vuelve al lugar durante 60.000 años. Transcurrido ese tiempo, un grupo de arqueólogos desentierra los restos y encuentra las herramientas y huesos de animales consumidos ¿Qué pueden averiguar esos arqueólogos de la vida y costumbres de los cazadores analizando exclusivamente esos pocos restos? Lo que acabo de relatar sucedió en el yacimiento israelí Nahal Mahanayeem Outlet y gracias al estudio "traceológico" de las herramientas encontradas, el investigador predoctoral de IPHES, Juan Ignacio Martin Viveros y un nutrido grupo de investigadores ha conseguido averiguar datos insospechados del uso de las herramientas y hábitos de aquellos lejanos cazadores prehistóricos.
