Curious To Know Astonishing Reason Why You Can't Stop Scrolling?

from The Health and Sport Show

Today we’re going to make you aware of the different types of habit that can shape our day, and how we can use this understanding to transform our day from chaotic and busy, to calm and productive.  Hello everybody and welcome, welcome, welcome to the health and sport show! My name’s Tom Butterfield and i’ll be your host as always to take you through the interesting world of habits!  We all have habits and routines don’t we. It might be the order we get ready in the morning, when making tea you might put the milk in first, do you hang your keys up as soon as you enter the house?  These might take zero thought, and very little effort because we do these habits all the time. Why are some habits so easy? Or perhaps you nearly always forget to hang your keys up…. triggering a mad panic in the morning as you try and get out of the house on time. The exercise routine you started feels like you’re towing a caravan….. We can’t get any momentum going…and we drift back to our ‘normal’ routine. Why are some habits so difficult? Habits, habit creation, and breaking habits is a fascinating and complex topic that we’ll break down and take a look at in future episodes no doubt. Today though we’re going to look at three different types of habit.    1) Uphill Habits - These habits are difficult to start, and easy to stop. I think most people would put activity/exercise, healthy eating and housework into this category. It takes time and effort to get yourself outside, it takes preparation time to make a healthy meal…. And we can think of a hundred things we’d rather do than the housework! (I don’t think that’s just me is it?)     2) Downhill Habits - These habits are very easy to start but can be quite difficult to stop. Imagine the feeling when that episode of your favourite show ended…..and that Netflix countdown starts until it plays the next episode…. That’s not by accident! That’s designed to remove any friction and keep you on your downhill habit. We have to apply the brakes to stop ourselves, and why would we deny ourselves more fun? All social media channels are designed to take advantage of this… the scroll down never ends, the short video plays on a loop, and the algorithms keep bringing us stuff we like.    3) Falling Habits - These types of habit are extremely difficult to stop. Harmful habits that need professional help from a therapist or specialist fall into this category. Examples could be any kind of addiction that either causes physical or emotional harm to yourself or others. These habits should take priority over the other two, and that means that it’s beneficial to go and talk to somebody about it…… we’d recommend a trained therapist of course, but if the first step is talking to a trusted person then that’s fine. Just make that first move.  What I’d like you to do is highlight one habit in your life you’d like to either make or break. What type of habit is it? So all of us have habits and routines in our life that we can do automatically. Yet some habits can be very difficulty to stick for long periods of time. These are usually the uphill habits that are difficult to start and easy to stop.  Then we have our downhill habits that are easy to start and difficult to stop.  And we have our falling habits that need eventual attention from an appropriately trained therapist.   Well thanks for listening, we hope you enjoyed the show. Remember to subscribe, comment, like or review…… or maybe just do all of them! We always appreciate them, and like it when our listeners and viewers contact us with ideas for future content, and questions they’d like answered.  Thanks again, and we’ll see you in the next episode.
