José nasceu em 1714 e subiu ao trono em 1750, com a idade de 36 anos. Enquanto foi príncipe do Brasil e herdeiro da Coroa, o seu pai, o rei D. João V, nunca lhe deu espaço para demonstrar a sua aptidão para a governação. Tendo deixado pouca correspondência, de D. José pouco mais se sabe de certo para além do seu gosto pela ópera e pela caça.
