Daddy-O
from Gunsmoke: Old West Stories
Originally Aired: February 12, 1961 Gunsmoke #462, "Daddy-O," finds Marshal Matt Dillon returning to Dodge City after six weeks away to discover that Kitty Russell has bought the Long Branch Saloon. Before Matt can properly congratulate her, Kitty receives a telegram announcing that her father, Wayne Russell, is arriving the next day. Wayne is a charming, well-dressed businessman who abandoned Kitty's mother when Kitty was an infant, and she has never met him. Despite her nervous excitement, the reunion proves awkward, especially when Chester inadvertently reveals that Kitty owns a saloon. Wayne clearly disapproves of his unmarried daughter being associated with such a business, creating an uncomfortable tension that persists even through the celebratory dinner he hosts for Kitty and her friends. In the following two weeks, Kitty remains distant and cold toward her father despite his efforts to connect with her. When Matt encounters them leaving the bank together, they share unexpected news: Wayne has convinced Kitty to sell the Long Branch to Mr. Botkin for cash. The decision raises questions about Wayne's true intentions and whether his sudden reappearance in Kitty's life will prove to be a blessing or something far more troubling.
