John here... Daniel "John" Carey.I am a survivor of child abuse and assault in a violent, poverty-stricken, extremely dysfunctional household of many misfortunes with seven brothers and sisters, and troubled parents who both suffered personality-altering head injuries when I was four. After another one of all too many brutal family experiences, while battered and bruised I hitchhiked across country at 16 and my eyes were open to a life outside of the house of woe in Ohio. I built myself up from homelessness and chose to not travel the trajectory of ruin my childhood set for me. I went to school for journalism, interned at a public radio station writing the morning news, worked for various newsweeklies in L.A., and spent many years as a ghost writer of books by doctors and nutritionists focused on health and nutrition. I wrote a 400-page book about plant-based nutrition (published in 2023). I experienced kidney failure in my 20s, which - according to doctors - caused me to die. The nurse who was to prep my body for transfer to the hospital morgue saw my eyes move.Recovering from that, I switched to a vegan diet (as one of the doctors suggested), and never went on dialysis - as other doctors had advised. I also didn't undergo the kidney transplant the other doctors said I would need to stay alive. I keep a year-round organic garden, and eat very clean. I run two workshops on Sundays, each for up to 20 members. I have facilitated over 450 screenwriter workshops, polish scripts for producers, work with writers to sharpen their scripts, and coach writers in a short form proof-of-concept filmCommunity. I wrote a 532-page screenwriting book used as a text in film schools (2nd edition published 2020). A script I wrote (about a fictional cult in a remote, half-abandoned farm town in 1960) was recently selected as one of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. I wrote two books about transforming your life and creating an existence that is right for you.(They were published in 2022 and 2023.)
