Dark Night Zero: The Stage Before the Dark Night of the Soul | John of the Cross & real experience

Many people today believe they have already gone through the Dark Night of the Soul or reached spiritual awakening. They describe heightened sensitivity, emotional intensity, and a new way of seeing the world. While these experiences are genuine and often life-changing, they are not necessarily the profound transformation described by the great mystical traditions.In this episode, I introduce what I call Dark Night Zero—a preparatory stage before the true Dark Night of the Soul. It is not a traditional term but a framework that emerged from comparing my own experiences with the writings of John of the Cross and observing common patterns in contemporary spirituality.During Dark Night Zero, people begin to question society, think more independently, and become emotionally and spiritually more sensitive. Many discover meditation, philosophy, or mysticism for the first time and experience a dramatic shift in perspective. Yet the ego often remains active, merely taking on a more spiritual identity. This subtle form of spiritual ego can easily be mistaken for enlightenment.The true Dark Night, however, is something very different. It is a gradual inner purification that reaches beyond thoughts, emotions, and intellectual understanding. Rather than gaining more concepts, the mind slowly loses its central role as a deeper awareness begins to emerge.In this episode, I explore the difference between emotional awakening and authentic contemplative transformation, explain why so many modern awakening narratives stop too early, and discuss why genuine spiritual development requires patience, humility, and a willingness to move beyond the need to understand everything intellectually.Dark Night Zero is not a mistake—it is an important beginning.
