Why do People Withdraw during the Dark Night of the Soul?

In this episode, I explain why avoiding people can be a natural and necessary phase of spiritual awakening—and why the Dark Night of the Soul is not the same as mental illness, depression, or unhealthy isolation. As consciousness shifts from the material world to spiritual awareness—and later beyond emotional spirituality—interests change radically. You may feel misunderstood, lose relationships, or feel the need to retreat from society. This episode explores the deeper reasons behind that withdrawal.Topics include:- Dark Night of the Soul explained- Spiritual awakening vs mental illness- Loss of interest, loneliness, and misunderstanding- The Second Dark Night (John of the Cross)- Avoiding people during spiritual awakening- Emotional detachment, duality, and enlightenment- Sensitivity, misophonia, noise, smell, and overwhelm- Conscious retreat, solitude, and disentanglement from societyThis episode focuses on the WHY behind avoidance and withdrawal during the Dark Night of the Soul.A future episode will cover guilt, shame, and how to balance retreat with social life.🎧 A podcast for those experiencing spiritual awakening, existential crisis, ego death, and the deeper stages of enlightenment.🔗 Some related thoughts can also be found in an article on the blog: https://the-dark-night-of-the-soul.blogspot.com/2025/08/loneliness-solitude-alone.htmlKeywords:#modernmysticism #JohnOfTheCross #ChristianMysticism #DarkNightOfSoul #spiritualmelancholy#SpiritualDarkness#DarkNightOfTheSoulPodcast#SpiritualCrisis#spiritualstruggle#mysticalself#DivineDiscontentExplained#SpiritualDespair

The Dark Night of the Soul: 11 Signs You Are Going Through It | John of the Cross & real experience

This episode explores 11 signs that you may be in the Dark Night of the Soul — a profound spiritual crisis that often appears shortly before awakening or deep inner transformation. The Dark Night is not simply ordinary depression, even though some aspects can look similar from the outside. In this episode, I speak about the subtle but important differences and describe experiences that many spiritually developing people go through when old structures begin to dissolve.Topics include:- losing interest in almost everything- feeling disconnected from meditation and spirituality- preferring silence, monotony, and isolation- heightened sensitivity to noise and people- negative thoughts, hopelessness, and inner darkness- losing spiritual abilities or intuition- unexplained physical symptoms and exhaustion- why this phase can feel like “hell” before awakeningThe reflections in this episode are based mainly on my own experience, combined with insights from mysticism, philosophy, and spiritual traditions. You do not need to experience all eleven signs. Even recognizing a few of them deeply may already indicate that you are in such a process. The Dark Night of the Soul can feel deeply painful and isolating, but it may also be part of a much larger transformation — a dissolution of the old self before a deeper consciousness emerges. If you are currently going through such a phase, this episode may help you understand the process better and feel less alone on the path. For a slightly different perspective on this subject, see the related article on the blog.https://the-dark-night-of-the-soul.blogspot.com/2026/04/does-every-spiritual-person-enter-dark.html#darknightofthesoul #spiritualawakening #mysticism #consciousness #spiritualpath #awakening #innertransformation #egodeath

Dark Night Zero: The Stage Before the Dark Night of the Soul | John of the Cross & real experience

Many people today believe they have already gone through the Dark Night of the Soul or reached spiritual awakening. They describe heightened sensitivity, emotional intensity, and a new way of seeing the world. While these experiences are genuine and often life-changing, they are not necessarily the profound transformation described by the great mystical traditions. In this episode, I introduce what I call Dark Night Zero—a preparatory stage before the true Dark Night of the Soul. It is not a traditional term but a framework that emerged from comparing my own experiences with the writings of John of the Cross and observing common patterns in contemporary spirituality.During Dark Night Zero, people begin to question society, think more independently, and become emotionally and spiritually more sensitive. Many discover meditation, philosophy, or mysticism for the first time and experience a dramatic shift in perspective. Yet the ego often remains active, merely taking on a more spiritual identity. This subtle form of spiritual ego can easily be mistaken for enlightenment. The true Dark Night, however, is something very different. It is a gradual inner purification that reaches beyond thoughts, emotions, and intellectual understanding. Rather than gaining more concepts, the mind slowly loses its central role as a deeper awareness begins to emerge. In this episode, I explore the difference between emotional awakening and authentic contemplative transformation, explain why so many modern awakening narratives stop too early, and discuss why genuine spiritual development requires patience, humility, and a willingness to move beyond the need to understand everything intellectually.Dark Night Zero is not a mistake—it is an important beginning. But it is only the beginning of a much deeper journey toward lasting contemplation, union with the Divine, and a consciousness that can no longer be reduced to thought alone. For a closer look at the stages described by St. John of the Cross, see the corresponding article on the blog:https://the-dark-night-of-the-soul.blogspot.com/2025/08/dark-night-of-soul-stages.html

When God Darkens the Soul: The Beautiful Turning Point | John of the Cross & the Dark Contemplation

Today we talk about the Dark Contemplation — the hidden and often misunderstood turning point within the Dark Night of the Soul. Many people only see the Dark Night as depression, emptiness, or spiritual loss. But according to St. John of the Cross, there is also a deeper process taking place beneath the darkness: a divine purification of consciousness. In this episode, we explore:• Why the Dark Night is not only suffering• The difference between Melancholy and Dark Contemplation• Why God “darkens” the mind according to John of the Cross• Spiritual emptiness, slow thinking, and the “cloud” over consciousness• The symbolism of the desert and inner fire• How serenity, restlessness, and inner burning can all be part of spiritual transformation• Why this phase may actually bring you closer to Enlightenment rather than further awayDark Contemplation is not the end of the path — it is the sacred turning point where the soul begins to detach from the world and awaken to a deeper inner reality. If you are going through a Dark Night yourself: hold on. The light may be hidden, but it has not disappeared.A related article on the blog explores some of the questions raised here.https://the-dark-night-of-the-soul.blogspot.com/2026/08/darkening-of-mind.html#DarkNightOfTheSoul #DarkContemplation #SpiritualAwakening #JohnOfTheCross #Mysticism #SpiritualTransformation #Meditation #Enlightenment #InnerHealing #Consciousness

Dark Night of the Soul vs Depression – What’s the Difference? | John of the Cross & real experience

In this episode we explore the difference between clinical depression and the Dark Night of the Soul, a concept rooted in mystical traditions such as the writings of John of the Cross. While modern psychology defines depression through symptom clusters like emptiness, cognitive fog, and emotional flattening, spiritual traditions often describe similar states as part of a deeper transformative process. We focus especially on the experience of emptiness, which can appear both in depression and in contemplative or spiritual development—but may have entirely different meanings depending on context. Is it a sign of psychological disorder, or a phase of inner restructuring and awakening? The episode also discusses how individuals can experience overlapping symptoms—loss of motivation, isolation, reduced thinking, and emotional numbness—yet interpret them in radically different ways depending on whether the framework is clinical psychology or spiritual philosophy. This is a reflection on the borderland between mental health, spirituality, and consciousness development, and why understanding both perspectives may be essential to avoid misinterpretation of inner crises.🔗 For more practical insights and shorter spiritual reflections find my page here: the-dark-night-of-the-soul.blogspot.comKeywords:#modernmysticism #JohnOfTheCross #ChristianMysticism #DarkNightOfSoul #spiritualmelancholy#SpiritualDarkness#DarkNightOfTheSoulPodcast#SpiritualCrisis#spiritualstruggle#mysticalself#DivineDiscontentExplained#SpiritualDespair
