The Khalis Audio Library continues with Chapter 9 of Darkness Defied: The Life and Legacy of Jaswant Singh Khalra, written by Bhai Ajmer Singh.Chapter 9 – Two Noteworthy Visits to Canada follows Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra’s two important visits to Canada in the spring and summer of 1995.By this point, his investigation into unclaimed bodies and secret cremations had placed his life in serious danger. Friends and well-wishers urged him to leave Panjab, while Canadian parliamentarians offered political asylum to him and his family. Bhai Sahib understood that accepting the offer could save his life, but refused to abandon those whose suffering he had taken responsibility for exposing. He asked: if he remained safely abroad, who would protect the thousands of Sikh families and innocent children facing the violence of the Indian state?During these visits, Bhai Sahib addressed Canadian parliamentarians, human rights organisations and Sikh Sangat. He presented evidence concerning the disappearance and extrajudicial killing of thousands of Sikhs, exposed the limitations of India’s courts and national human rights institutions, and called upon the international community to act.Yet his message extended beyond documenting abuses or seeking justice through existing institutions. Bhai Sahib spoke openly about Khalistan, the right to self-determination and the need for a national home in which Sikhs could live freely and with dignity.He also challenged those within the diaspora who believed that the Khalistan movement had ended. The armed struggle had been suppressed through overwhelming state violence, but the conditions that produced it had never been resolved. State repression could kill individuals, but it could not extinguish the demand for freedom. Bhai Sahib therefore placed a clear responsibility upon Sikhs living abroad to continue the work of Khalistan rather than retreat into personal security and material comfort.The chapter closes with his journey through England and Vienna, where he continued raising the issue of the disappeared and delivered what would become his final speech outside India.
