The Khalis Audio Library continues with Chapter 9 of Darkness Defied: The Life and Legacy of Jaswant Singh Khalra, written by Bhai Ajmer Singh.Chapter 9 – Two Noteworthy Visits to Canada follows Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra’s two important visits to Canada in the spring and summer of 1995.By this point, his investigation into unclaimed bodies and secret cremations had placed his life in serious danger. Friends and well-wishers urged him to leave Panjab, while Canadian parliamentarians offered political asylum to him and his family. Bhai Sahib understood that accepting the offer could save his life, but refused to abandon those whose suffering he had taken responsibility for exposing. He asked: if he remained safely abroad, who would protect the thousands of Sikh families and innocent children facing the violence of the Indian state?During these visits, Bhai Sahib addressed Canadian parliamentarians, human rights organisations and Sikh Sangat. He presented evidence concerning the disappearance and extrajudicial killing of thousands of Sikhs, exposed the limitations of India’s courts and national human rights institutions, and called upon the international community to act.Yet his message extended beyond documenting abuses or seeking justice through existing institutions. Bhai Sahib spoke openly about Khalistan, the right to self-determination and the need for a national home in which Sikhs could live freely and with dignity.He also challenged those within the diaspora who believed that the Khalistan movement had ended. The armed struggle had been suppressed through overwhelming state violence, but the conditions that produced it had never been resolved. State repression could kill individuals, but it could not extinguish the demand for freedom. Bhai Sahib therefore placed a clear responsibility upon Sikhs living abroad to continue the work of Khalistan rather than retreat into personal security and material comfort.The chapter closes with his journey through England and Vienna, where he continued raising the issue of the disappeared and delivered what would become his final speech outside India. In Chapter Eight of Darkness Defied: The Life and Legacy of Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra, Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra’s investigation takes a decisive turn.What began as a search for individual victims of enforced disappearance develops into the discovery of a systematic pattern: Sikhs killed in police custody and their bodies cremated as “unidentified” or “unclaimed.”Following the paper trail through crematorium registers, municipal records, post-mortem documentation, timber receipts and witness testimony, Khalra and the Human Rights Wing begin assembling documentary evidence of mass secret cremations. Darkness Defied | Episode 5 | Chapter 7 – Back in the BattlefieldThe Khalis Audio Library continues with Chapter 7 of Darkness Defied: The Life and Legacy of Jaswant Singh Khalra, written by Bhai Ajmer Singh.Chapter 7 – Back in the Battlefield marks a major turning point in Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra’s life.Returning to Panjab in 1992, Bhai Sahib enters an environment of intense state repression. Rather than remaining on the sidelines, he throws himself into political and human rights work, helping establish the Human Rights Wing and beginning the painstaking process of documenting what was happening across Panjab.We follow some of his early investigations: travelling from village to village, speaking directly with families, gathering names and testimony, challenging fabricated police encounters, and confronting the disturbing practice of bodies being cremated as “unidentified” or “unclaimed” even as their families searched for them. The chapter covers the Behla incident, his investigation into the persecution of 43 members of Baba Gurbachan Singh Manochal’s family, his efforts to recover the bodies of those killed by the state, and the extraordinary Patti case, where a man declared dead in a police encounter was discovered still alive at the hospital, before being taken away and killed.   We also continue to see the political thinker encountered in Chapter 6. The Khalis Podcast continues with the next instalment of Darkness Defied: The Life and Legacy of Jaswant Singh Khalra, written by Bhai Ajmer Singh and narrated by Ranveer Singh.This episode features:📖 Chapter 5 – On the Land of EnglandThis is one of the most important chapters in the book.When Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra travelled to England in 1991, he did not come merely to escape repression or begin a new life abroad. He arrived with a clear political mission: to expose the Indian state’s atrocities against Sikhs internationally, engage those who remained distant from or uncertain about the Sikh struggle, and strengthen the movement through greater political and theoretical clarity. The chapter makes clear that Bhai Khalra did not view human-rights abuses as isolated excesses committed by a few officials. He believed that human rights could not be separated from politics, because state violence emerged from a deeper political conflict. His understanding of the disappearances, torture and killings in Panjab was therefore inseparable from the question of Sikh sovereignty and the struggle for Khalistan. By this stage, he had reached several firm conclusions: that the June 1984 attack on Sri Darbar Sahib had laid the foundation for Khalistan; that the armed Sikh struggle had brought that goal into clearer focus; that no acceptable solution could be found within the Indian political framework; and that the Panth needed to remain cautious of electoral politics. In England, Bhai Khalra established an operational office in Slough, equipped it with a telephone, fax machine, printer and typewriter, and began corresponding with Western governments, the United Nations and Amnesty International. He wrote political articles, contributed to Sikh newspapers and helped produce a publication titled Liberation Khalistan, through which he sought to provide the movement with ideological direction and political discipline. This matters because it challenges the narrow image of Bhai Khalra as only a human-rights activist. His later investigation into the secret cremations did not exist outside his politics. It emerged from a much wider understanding of state power, Sikh resistance and the right of the Sikh Kaum to self-determination.The chapter also records his efforts to campaign for Sikh political prisoners, contact international institutions, organise a hunger strike during a Commonwealth summit and bring the persecution of Sikhs into British political debate. Perhaps the most striking section concerns his political asylum. Bhai Khalra had been granted the right to remain safely in Britain. He could have brought his family to England and continued serving the Panth from abroad. He had already declared himself stateless, writing that he could not accept citizenship of a state responsible for killing thousands of Sikhs and threatening his own life. Yet after witnessing the intensification of repression in Panjab following the deeply boycotted 1992 elections, he made the sudden decision to return. Those around him tried to stop him, including a local MP, but Khalra remained resolute: the work he believed he had to perform could not be done from England. The book presents this decision not as recklessness or stubbornness, but as something rooted in spiritual conviction. Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra understood his return as Satguru’s Bhana, a calling that could not be measured only through personal safety, reason or self-preservation. The Khalis Podcast is back with Season 2 and to kick start this season, I'm joined by the amazing Hip Hop artist L-Fresh The Lion. One of the common talking points to have emerged from this Podcast series, is the ongoing Farmer’s Protest on the outskirts of Delhi. Most of our guests have spoken about the impact it has had on them and their work. As the Sikh and Panjabi diaspora continue to watch from a far, we all feel see the farmers' desire to bring change, but we also see the injustice and the heavy-handed response from the Indian state and police.That's why we felt it would only be appropriate to help amplify voices from the ground. We wanted to speak with someone from Delhi; someone who has first-hand experience and knowledge of the ground reality.In this episode we speak with Japleen Kaur, who is a student with a graduate degree in Psychology from University of Delhi. She is currently volunteering at the Singhu Border to support the farmers.
