The initial week of penance is intended for the benefit of all living beings on the planet. The second week is devoted to the peace (Shanthi) of those souls who have passed away. The third week is for the virtuous souls from the Universe who aspire to be born to righteous parents. Similar to how a farmer seeks fertile soil for quality seeds, these souls also seek spiritually advanced parents. There exist souls that have been born and have attained self-realization. Swami Vivekananda asserts that whenever there is a necessity for goodness in humanity, he will incarnate and determine the moment to depart from the physical form (Icha death – death at one’s own will). Bhishma possessed the remarkable ability to choose the timing of his death.
