De Bijlmerbajes was opgezet om misdadigers te heropvoeden, niet te straffen. De Penitentiaire Inrichting Over-Amstel was ontworpen door een van de eerste vrouwelijke architecten in Nederland: Koos Pot-Keegstra. De gevangenis moest zo humaan mogelijk, maar de vrijheid van gedetineerden had helaas ook een keerzijde. De Bijlmerbajes was berucht door gijzelingen en de vele ontsnappingen en werd het symbool voor een wereldwijd debat over een humaner gevangenisleven.Hoe maak je een gevangenis menselijker? Is zo'n instelling wel houdbaar? En was deze aanpak achteraf een succes? Auteurs Nils von der Assen en Daphné Dupont-Nivet schreven daar het boek De hechtenisclub over.
