Un estudio reciente, realizado por investigadores de la Universidad de Washington y el primero que busca encontrar diferencias que ha fijado la evolución a nivel de los genes, indica que existen 267 genes exclusivos de los humanos. El estudio indica, además, que las mayores diferencias entre los genes de chimpancés, neandertales y humanos se dan en las regiones que regulan la expresión de los genes y no en las que contienen la información para fabricar proteínas.
