Dead Men Raise & Silent Voices Speak: 1 Samuel 3–4 and John 11 (Day 139)

from The Bible in a Year Podcast with Scott Purcell

What happens when God breaks His silence? Today in the Book of 1 Samuel, the spiritual darkness of Eli's household reaches a breaking point. In an era when "the word of the Lord was rare," God bypasses the corrupt priesthood to call a young boy sleeping in the Tabernacle, altering the course of Israel's history. Meanwhile, the Ark of the Covenant is captured in a disastrous battle with the Philistines. In the Gospel of John, we witness the ultimate demonstration of divine authority over the grave. Confronted with the devastating grief of Martha and Mary, Jesus declares, "I am the resurrection and the life," before standing at a tomb and commanding a man dead for four days to step out into the light.Today’s Scripture:📖 1 Samuel 2:27–4:22 – A man of God pronounces judgment on Eli’s house. Soon after, the Lord calls young Samuel in the night, establishing him as a trusted prophet. Disaster strikes when Israel treats the Ark of the Covenant like a magic charm; the Philistines slaughter the army, capture the Ark, and kill Eli's sons, causing Eli to collapse and die as the glory departs from Israel.📖 John 11:1–44 – Jesus receives word that His friend Lazarus is sick, but intentionally delays His arrival. When He reaches Bethany, Lazarus has been dead for four days. After sharing in the deep grief of the sisters, Jesus comes to the tomb, thanks the Father, and cries out with a loud voice: "Lazarus, come out!"—proving that death has no power over His word.📖 Psalm 64:1–10 – David prays for protection against secret plots and the "whet tongues" of the wicked who shoot arrows of bitter words from ambush. He rejoices knowing that God will suddenly shoot His own arrows, turning their own tongues against them, while the righteous find refuge in the Lord.RESOURCES & READ-ALONG 📺 Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYKi8-_5xHGL_nFAZOthHtZhcb4CqW4ZF 📖 Follow the Text (LEB): https://biblia.com/books/leb/ 🗓️ Download the Full Plan: https://www.biblica.com/resources/reading-plans/CONNECT & SUPPORT 📧 Questions?
