Dealing with difficult emotions

from spiritual principles made practical's podcast · host Scott Friedman

Our emotions are created by our thoughts.  Listening to the thoughts in our mind helps us identify the thoughts that are creating the difficult emotions.  Once we identify the thought creating the emotion, we are in a position to ask if that thought is. true. Invariably, there are aspects of the thought that are not true.  The more we accept the negative thought, the more space there is for accurate positive thoughts to come into our mind.  If you're like me, the negative thoughts don't stop, they just lose power and frequency. The number of times the thought that I'm failing in life and should just give up has come up in my mind is too many to count.  I accept the existence of that thought and quickly the thought comes up, "I'm going to see this through.  I refuse to give up."  Then examples of overcoming difficult times and obstacles from my past come to mind and I think, I've overcome seemingly insurmountable odds before, I can do it again. Don't deny the negative emotions. Allow them and the thoughts that create them to exist.  Just inspect the thoughts for veracity and choose not to act on them.  Denying and fighting against the negative thoughts only makes them stronger. Acceptance heals.
