I may have been 16 or 17 years old when this happened. I was with a boy I liked and we had just come back from a nice evening of miniature golf in a nearby city. This was a story I told one friend immediately after it happened, and she laughed. Because I carried the shame of that experience, I didn’t tell anyone else. As I look back on a handful of friendships, when I shared the hard things I was experiencing, they would minimize it or laugh. With time, I learned to validate my experiences with the right support and distance myself from relationships that caused harm or laughed at my pain.
