Defying Border Walls: Living in the Borderlands of Teaching and Learning

Border walls are exclusive and are, furthermore, manifestations of colonization, imperialism, and racial stratification. Given these conditions, how should we teach and learn about the nebulous borderlands we live? The answer is borderlands pedagogy. In his keynote address T. Mark Montoya introduces us to borderlands pedagogy, and how we can defy border walls to create places for new political practices and generate spaces for social transformation in the classroom and beyond. While scholarly focus on the borderlands has generally been on border walls themselves, this keynote will offer a borderlands pedagogical approach to recommend ways we as diverse learning communities can defy border walls, starting in the classroom.This keynote is part of the “Border Walls and Borderlands” conference, organized by the Center for Geopolitics of the Raoul Dandurand Chair.
