Depression and the Gut-Brain Axis

from Defiant Health Radio with Dr. William Davis · host William Davis, MD

Conventional "solutions" for depression are largely inadequate: often ineffective, with side-effects that include weight gain, sexual dysfunction, and suicide. Evidence is increasingly pointing towards the intestinal microbiome as a source for depressive symptoms. This tells us that prescription drugs such as the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, that only address a step in the pathway of serotonin metabolism, do not address the underlying cause of many, if not most, cases of depression: disruption of the intestinal microbiome. Species such as Turicibacter sanguinis are proving to be crucial players in mood, while bacterial and fungal overgrowth, SIBO and SIFO, can also be common contributors to depression. The bad news: these disruptions of the intestinal microbiome are common and widespread. The good news: there are steps you can take to remedy the situation and thereby potentially have marked effects on mood and depression.AIRE device from FoodMarble:https://foodmarble.comBioGaia Gastrus tablets are the source for Lactobacillus reuteri: https://everidis.com/product/biogaia-gastrus/(From the North American distributor)My new book is Super Gut: A Four-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight that shows you 1) how to identify and replace lost microbes from the human microbiome with extraordinary results, and 2) how to beat back unhealthy microbes that have proliferated and can be responsible for numerous health conditions.Find Super Gut in these bookstores:Barnes & NobleAmazonBooks a MillionFor more information on Dr. Davis’ programs:Books:My new book is Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose WeightWheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded editionWheat Belly 10-Day Grain DetoxWheat Belly 30-Minute (Or Less!)
