Infertility, Miscarriage, Premature delivery: The Crucial Role of Endotoxemia

The evolving science has become overwhelming: Lipopolysaccharide endotoxemia, i.e., the entry of bacterial breakdown products into the bloodstream, is a major driver of multiple problems in female reproductive health. Unfortunately, this crucial factor is almost never addressed in conventional healthcare settings. Thankfully, there are steps YOU can take personally to address this important health issue. Support the showYouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@WilliamDavisMDBlog: WilliamDavisMD.comMembership website for two-way Zoom group meetings: InnerCircle.DrDavisInfiniteHealth.comBooks:Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose WeightWheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

"Why do I have food intolerances?

Food intolerances are growing and more and more people are unable to eat FODMAPs-containing foods, histamine-containing foods, nightshades, legumes, fructose-containing foods and numerous others, sometimes reduced to consuming only a handful of "safe" foods. Why is this happening, something that was virtually unknown only a generation or two ago? Much of it is due to the excessive proliferation of Proteobacteria species in your gut. But it's not just about food intolerances, as these intolerances are just the tip of the iceberg.

Why Life is Better Without Wheat

If you are given the kindergarten version of a healthy diet, well, you can expect mediocre results at best, disastrous results at worst. Why not graduate to a higher level of dietary understanding? But don't count on obtaining such insights from conventional sources. Here are some cold, hard facts about the consumption of wheat and grains that everyone should be aware of.

Understanding the Microbiome: Endotoxemia and Translocation

They are somewhat more advanced concepts, but the microbial phenomena of endotoxemia and translocation are proving to be critical processes in initiating or worsening a long list of human health conditions. Because most mainstream doctors have abdicated their responsibility in providing advice to maintaining or regaining health, it is up to YOU to understand these important concepts. Here is a basic discussion to help you understand the importance of these fundamental microbiome concepts.

What is gluten and why you should avoid it

Despite my Wheat Belly series of books having been read by millions of people in nearly 40 countries, many people still think that a grain-based diet is healthy. Many also confuse this message with being "gluten-free."Let's think about this issue more clearly so that you understand the power you have in your hands to assume control over health and weight by being smarter and better informed than the misguided masses following dietary guidelines or are victims of an exploitative food industry.

Why is grain elimination good for oral health?

Scientific insights into the oral microbiome are yielding many new lessons for dental health: mouthwashes are actually dangerous, fluoridated drinking water does not prevent cavities, some toothpastes contain harmful additives. But the most important factor for dental health is often neglected: the role of eliminating grains. The amylopectin A of grains is a major factor in degrading dental health and the oral microbiome.

Does dementia start in the mouth?

A number of studies in which the brain tissue of people who have died of dementia have revealed the presence of microbial species such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Fusobacterium nucleatum, and Tannerella forsythia--all oral microbes. This is an example of translocation, i.e., the migration of microbes from one body site to another. But does this cause or accelerate dementia? This remains an unsettled issue. However, if you have had an oral microbiome test and you have one or more of these species in your mouth, should you eradicate it? Dental hygiene is likely not enough. For this reason, I created a homemade oral rinse using a combination of the fatty acid derivative, monolaurin, with the essential oil from peppermint that is intended for short-term use:Monolaurin Oral RinseThis recipe yields a 2% monolaurin solution. The inclusion of peppermint essential oil adds additional antimicrobial effects. Makes 100 ml (3.5 ounces)2000 mg monolaurin (powder or liquid)70 ml filtered water30 ml glycerol liquid4 drops peppermint essential oilIn clean glass container, combine monolaurin, water, glycerol, and peppermint. Cap and shake. Be sure to shake prior to use. Rinse, then spit (do not swallow), for 10 minutes once per day for no more than 14 days.

    It's Not Yogurt

We've been fermenting HUMAN-SOURCED microbes to generate very high microbial counts and obtain specific health benefits. The end-result looks and smells sort of like conventional yogurt, but it is NOT yogurt. (I called it "yogurt" for lack of a better term.) It's my way of generating high counts of important microbes that most people have lost due to antibiotics and other factors. You can enjoy this unique "yogurt" with some blueberries, nuts, or your choice of natural sweetener.

Why You Should NOT Measure Apoprotein B

Apoprotein B provides a virtual count of the lipoprotein particles in the bloodstream that cause coronary heart disease. It is often held up as superior to the widely used LDL cholesterol value. Is this true?It is true, but it does not mean that measuring apoprotein B tells you much about health. Compare this to the enormous amount of insight provided by measuring the REAL cause of heart disease: small LDL particles that gives you an entire universe of insight into your overall health, as well as risk for heart disease. And it is wonderfully and completely manageable with some simple strategies.

What's all this about making "yogurt"?

Why has yogurt making gone viral?First of all, it's NOT yogurt. It looks and smells like yogurt. By FDA regulations, something called yogurt must be fermented with traditional yogurt-making microbes Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus. That's NOT what we are doing. Instead, we are fermenting human microbes, i.e., microbes that are adapted to the human body and provide substantial benefits but have been lost by most people because of their susceptibility to common antibiotics. Using my methods (prolonged fermentation, addition of prebiotic fiber, selecting microbial species to achieve specific effects) we obtain hundreds of billions of microbes per serving for greater benefits. These are the concepts I introduced in my Super Gut book and extended further in the Super Body book.

Are microplastics the newest cardiovascular risk factor?

The evidence is growing that suggest that microplastics, or more specifically smaller nanoplastics, are triggers for atherosclerotic disease with increased risk for heart attack, stroke, and death. While your doctor wastes your time and money obsessing about cholesterol and statin drugs that should have been discarded decades ago, you need to address the REAL factors that cause heart disease. Add nanoplastics to that list. Thankfully, you can begin to make an impact on your ingestion of plastic particles but may need to re-examine many long-accepted habits.Support the showYouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@WilliamDavisMDBlog: WilliamDavisMD.comMembership website for two-way Zoom group meetings: InnerCircle.DrDavisInfiniteHealth.comBooks:Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose WeightWheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

Reduce and track abdominal visceral fat for improved health

Abdominal visceral fat, i.e., fat within the abdominal cavity that surrounds abdominal organs, is unique and the source of so many common health problems. While people who are overweight with a protuberant abdomen almost always have an excess of abdomen visceral fat, it can also occur with a flat abdomen. You can reduce and track the amount of abdominal visceral fat with home bioimpedance devices. The Crime Called Type 2 Diabetes

The crime is not having type 2 diabetes. The crime is that conventional forces in healthcare essentially turn a blind eye to all the ways available to NOT be a type 2 diabetic. Pharmaceutical executives throw lavish parties to celebrate the huge revenues that derive from diabetes drugs that now include the awful GLP-1 agonists, while almost no one in healthcare shows people how to not be diabetic--THAT's the crime.

How long to consume SIBO Yogurt?

SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) is now epidemic in the U.S., affecting around 50% of the population. It is responsible for an impressive range of health conditions from obesity, to type 2 diabetes, to irritable bowel syndrome, to fibromyalgia and numerous others. We have been addressing SIBO with a collection of microbes that I call "SIBO Yogurt," a collection of human-sourced microbes that colonize the small intestine and produce natural antibiotics effective in killing the species of SIBO, a strategy that has been exceptionally effective. But how long should you consume SIBO Yogurt to confidently correct this situation?Support the showYouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@WilliamDavisMDBlog: WilliamDavisMD.comMembership website for two-way Zoom group meetings: InnerCircle.DrDavisInfiniteHealth.comBooks:Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose WeightWheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

Why it's crucial to keep triglycerides at 60 mg/dl or less

There's one truly helpful value on a standard cholesterol panel: triglycerides. Ironically, it's also the value most likely to be ignored or mismanaged because the doctor wastes your time by focusing on the useless total and LDL cholesterol values, having been brainwashed by the flawed science and pharmaceutical marketing. Here is WHY triglycerides are so important, HOW you can reduce your value to the very important level of 60 mg/dl or less without resorting to the use of any pharmaceuticals, only natural and dietary strategies.

What do I mean by "Super Body"?

It's not about having the build of a bodybuilder, nor 6-pack abs, or bulging biceps. It's about having optimal metabolic health that stacks the odds in favor of being free of heart disease, risk for cognitive impairment, cancer, loss of independence and other health conditions. We therefore work to reduce or minimize abdominal visceral fat while restoring youthful musculature. We do so starting with unique methods to restore a healthy gastrointestinal microbiome, then restore other factors largely absent from the modern health experience, effects you can track using a variety of methods: biomarkers, grip strength, visceral fat measurement, for example.

Why Losing Weight the Wrong Way Can Be Dangerous

If you lose weight by reducing calories--a diet, bariatric procedure, or pharmaceutical like a GLP-1 agonist--you will indeed lose weight at first. But long-term, unhealthy changes in health will develop: eventual weight regain, increased risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, dementia, frailty. And thare are now sufficient data to tell us that you also cut your life short by several years. The key: NEVER engage in any of these methods. If you have, there are steps you can take to compensate and specifically target the most unhealthy forms of body fat, restore youthful muscle, restore basal metabolic rate and thereby absolve yourself of these unhealthy outcomes. You can find a full discussion of these strategies in my new Super Body book:https://www.amazon.com/SUPER-Body-Composition-Youthful-Contours/dp/0306835991Support the showYouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@WilliamDavisMDBlog: WilliamDavisMD.comMembership website for two-way Zoom group meetings: InnerCircle.DrDavisInfiniteHealth.comBooks:Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose WeightWheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

Why Weight Loss Can Be Harmful to Your Health

Yes, you can lose weight by reducing calories whether through a calorie-cutting diet, bariatric procedure, or pharmaceutical. But the effect is almost always temporary and followed by a return of weight followed by significant downturn in health. You were also likely not advised that losing weight by cutting calories, we now know through tracking of large numbers of people over many years, likely abbreviates your life by several years. In this and future podcasts, I will be introducing concepts that block these effects, concepts that I shall be exploring in even greater depth in my new book, Super Body. **Disclaimer:**The information presented in my books, blog posts, YouTube videos, podcasts, and other content is for informational and educational purposes only. Oxalate Hysteria

There are a number of people advocating a diet low in oxalates, essentially eliminating many green leafy vegetables, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, celery, most nuts, berries, cocoa, and numerous otherwise healthy foods. Unfortunately, this advice is misguided and based on an incomplete understanding of the evidence. While there is no harm in reducing dietary oxalates beyond inconvenience, lack of variety, and the absence of many genuinely healthy foods, reducing oxalate exposure is not the primary problem, just a Band-Aid. Oxalate hyperabsorption is due to disruption of the gastrointestinal microbiome: loss of the many species that metabolize oxalates but were eliminated or reduced due to antibiotic exposure, and the development of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, SIBO, that is associated with abnormally increased oxalate absorption. Address the disrupted gastrointestinal and dietary oxalate consumption is no longer an issue for the vast majority of people. In this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, let’s discuss why so many people have been misled by this dietary oxalate issue and a smarter way to deal with what might be interpreted as oxalate intolerance.

What happens when you deprive yourself of blue light?

Science journalist Lynne Peeples did something extraordinary: She spent 10 days in a nuclear bunker exposed only to dim red light but no blue or other visible wavelength of light. She also rid the space of all clocks or other time-indicating devices and even avoided having any human contact. What she learned opened up numerous questions on how to best manage our day-to-day light exposure, wavelengths, and the implications they have on the quality of sleep, our moods, even various aspects of health and performance. After these sorts of unique experiences, along with discussions on circadian rhythms with numerous scientists working on this topic, Lynne comes to some unique conclusions. Lynne is the author of the book “The Inner Clock: Living in Sync with Our Circadian Rhythms” in which she explores the role of purposeful management of your circadian rhythm, your inner clock, for management of energy, focus, and mood. There's a 50:50 chance that you have this epidemic condition

There is a non-infectious epidemic occurring right beneath our noses. The likelihood that you are affected is around 50%. It's the epidemic of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, or SIBO. In this episode of Defiant Health, I run through the rationale that reveals that, even conservatively estimated, more than 100 million Americans have this condition.Because of the natural permeability of the small intestine designed for nutrient absorption, invading fecal microbes that have ascended from the colon yield a phenomenon called "endotoxemia," or the entry of bacterial breakdown products into the bloodstream. This is how a disrupted small intestinal microbiome can be experienced as depression, anxiety, neurodegenerative disorders like dementia; heart problems such as coronary disease, atrial fibrillation, and congestive heart failure; skin issues such as as rosacea and psoriasis; muscle and joint issues such as fibromyalgia; gastrointestinal issues such as irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn's disease. Understand how to recognize this process and manage it and you have been given a huge advantage in regaining control over health.

Here's a microbe you should know about: Bacillus subtilis

My original recipe for SIBO Yogurt included three microbes chosen for their ability to colonize or germinate in the small intestine and produce bacteriocins, natural peptide antibiotics effective in killing the species of SIBO. The original formulation therefore specified L. reuteri, L. gasseri, and B. coagulans. However, B. coagulans proved to be unreliable in generating the high microbial counts we desire to overcome the trillions of invading fecal microbial species of SIBO. I therefore replaced it with B. subtilis, a virtual powerhouse of a bacteriocin producer, producing up to 7 bacteriocins, thereby giving you greater power in pushing back invading fecal microbes in SIBO. So in this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, let me get you acquainted with this powerful microbe that, I believe, can provide major advantages in your efforts to take back control over gastrointestinal and overall health.

Yogurt That's Not Yogurt: My Accidental Sleep Cure

I’ve personally struggled with insomnia for years, unable to sleep more than a few hours at a time, experiencing frequent awakenings, sometimes awakening at 3 or 4 in the morning and unable to get back to sleep. And I tried almost everything short of prescription sedatives: tryptophan, 5-HTP, megadose melatonin, GABA, theanine, the antihistamine diphenhydramine, self-hypnosis, YouTube videos that claim to help you sleep within minutes. The few that worked left me feeling drugged the next day and, if they did not work, I was often left irritable and fatigued. All this changed when I began experimenting with microbiome strategies. It’s become clear that the gut microbiome plays a major role in determining the quality, length, and content of your sleep. An outsized role is played, however, by the phenomenon of endotoxemia, the entry of bacterial breakdown products into the bloodstream and that is the topic I’d like to focus on in this episode of the Defiant Health podcast. The experience is so preliminary that it has not yet been validated in clinical studies. But if the solution is as easy, inexpensive, and accessible as something that looks and smells like yogurt (it’s NOT yogurt, of course), then why not give it a try? You may be among the roughly 50% of people who experience dramatic improvements in the duration and quality of your sleep.Support the showYouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@WilliamDavisMDBlog: WilliamDavisMD.comMembership website for two-way Zoom group meetings: InnerCircle.DrDavisInfiniteHealth.comBooks:Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose WeightWheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

    Misplaced blame

You’re walking down the street, minding your own business, just out to run some errands. You’re wearing a black jacket, running shoes, a baseball cap. You pass the doors of a bank. Suddenly, the bank’s doors fly open and a man runs out, a man wearing a black jacket and a baseball cap. You see him running at top speed, disappearing around a corner. Moments later, two policemen burst through the bank’s doors, spot you, roughly spin you around, handcuff and arrest you. It’s a clear case of mistaken identify, of blaming you for something you had nothing to do with. It’s wrong, it’s frightening, and can lead to all sorts of misery and trouble. You’re going to spend some time in jail, have to hire a lawyer, spend thousands of dollars to defend yourself against accusations that were unimaginable just a short time before. Sounds awful, doesn’t it? Well, similar scenarios play out in health information every day: Something—a component of diet, a blood marker, a lifestyle practice—is wrongly blamed for some health problem such as heart disease or skin rashes or depression. In this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, let’s discuss how, just as someone could be blamed for a crime they did not commit, all too often, some aspect of life or health is wrong incriminated for some unhealthy outcome. But learn to recognize this pattern and you will be better equipped to protect yourself and get closer to the truth.

    Microbiome Madness

It’s truly an exciting time. The information and science surrounding the microbiome is exploding. It seems that a day doesn’t pass without some new, interesting insight emerges on microbiome questions,  providing us with unprecedented insights and strategies to get better control over health, weight management, aging, etc. Look at what we are accomplishing, for example, with our cultivation of L. reuteri and L. crispatus. But it also means that misinformation, misinterpretation, and sometimes misrepresentation are becoming more common, leading you to make mistakes that could yield ineffective or even harmful results. In this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, let's cut through the misinformation and get a better understanding of what is going on.

What was this Wheat Belly thing all about?

When the first Wheat Belly book was released in 2011, it quickly leapt to centerstage, gaining a huge worldwide following. Millions of copies of the book were sold in 37 countries, the conversation was featured in major media from network news to Dr. Oz to . I don’t believe that this was due to my personal charm or charisma, but because it worked: people experienced unexpected and substantial health and weight loss benefits even if such things had eluded them for years. Well, over those 15 years, memories have faded and, sadly, some people have gradually gravitated back to consuming this thing that was essentially created in a laboratory with geneticists and farmers amplifying its toxic effects. People succumb to media, marketing, and the pressures of people around them who are ready to say things like “How can that possibly be true?” or “Everything in moderation” or “Just a little won’t hurt.”  In this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, let’s review the arguments I made in the original Wheat Belly book to remind you that, yes, this is among the most toxic things that has ever emerged from the food and agribusiness industries.

How to use inulin to map the location of microbes in your GI tract

Inulin is a common fiber, the fiber found in root vegetables like onions, garlic, shallots, asparagus, jicama and many other foods. Humans lack the digestive enzymes, however, for metabolizing inulin, but microbes living in your gastrointestinal track are able to metabolize it. When beneficial microbes metabolize inulin, they convert it to fatty acids with numerous beneficial effects on gastrointestinal, brain, and metabolic health. But, when undesirable microbes metabolize inulin, bad things can happen and cause you to experience symptoms such as excessive bloating, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, mental effects such as anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, worsening joint pain or skin rashes. The difference is all about location of these microbes, where they are located in the 30-feet of your gastrointestinal tract. In this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, Let’s therefore discuss how to use the common fiber inulin to map where such microbes are living in your GI tract and, should you determine that undesirable species are living where they don’t belong, what you can do about it.Support the showYouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@WilliamDavisMDBlog: WilliamDavisMD.comMembership website for two-way Zoom group meetings: InnerCircle.DrDavisInfiniteHealth.comBooks:Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose WeightWheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

    The Guardrails of Diet

Here are what I call "The Guardrails of Diet,' i.e.., metabolic markers that tell you whether your diet is genuinely healthy or not. Too many people put too much stock in either a single marker like blood glucose, or the wrong marker like LDL cholesterol that takes you down the path of health disruptions: weight gain, visceral fat expansion, protein glycation, insulin resistance, formation of VLDL particles, cause you to rely on unhealthy foods, even increased risk for heart disease and other conditions. In this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, Let’s therefore discuss how to identify the markers that keep you on course for an ideal diet.

Managing high blood pressure without drugs

Conventional healthcare and dietary advice are, unfortunately, virtually useless in providing effective strategies on how to manage blood pressure naturally and nutritionally. They have, for instance, the DASH diet that can reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure by a few millimeters but not more. They provide bland advice like lose weight or move more. Yet there are effective strategies that you can adopt that powerfully reduce and typically normalize blood pressure. Such strategies may sound unconventional but are really efforts to restore your physiology to mimic that of populations who enjoy lifelong normal blood pressure. In this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, let’s discuss these strategies that can set you free from the tyranny of the healthcare system and their over-reliance on pharmaceuticals to control blood pressure.Support the showYouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@WilliamDavisMDBlog: WilliamDavisMD.comMembership website for two-way Zoom group meetings: InnerCircle.DrDavisInfiniteHealth.comBooks:Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose WeightWheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

    Ten Unexpected Signs of SIBO

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, or SIBO, is now rampant, a virtual nationwide epidemic, a condition now carried by around 50% of the population. If you have food intolerances, fibromyalgia, restless leg syndrome, are overweight or obese, have irritable bowel syndrome, an autoimmune condition, atrial fibrillation or numerous other common conditions, it is highly likely that SIBO is either the original cause or at least an exacerbating factor. You can take all the antiinflammatory drugs, biologics, weight loss drugs or numerous other pharmaceutical “fixes” but, unless the SIBO is dealt with, you will lose this battle and more health problems are in your future. In this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, Let’s identify 10 unexpected ways that tell you that, yes, you’ve got this condition. Hyaluronic acid: Most important DIETARY fiber of all?

We’ve been urged to include plenty of dietary fiber in our daily routines, fibers that come from vegetables, legumes, grains and other plant sources. But there is an animal-sourced fiber that has nearly disappeared from the modern human diet: hyaluronic acid. Hyluronic acid has nearly disappeared from the diet because it is primarily sourced from animal products, especially organ meats like brain, skin, and tongue. But hyaluronic acid is a fiber crucial for the health of many human organs: skin, joints, uterus, cervix, vagina, arteries. It is also a fiber with significant benefits on the gastrointestinal microbiome that, in turn, yields substantial benefits via microbial metabolites. In this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, let’s discuss the role of this important fiber and how to bring it back into your lifestyle to obtain its many benefits._________________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here.Support the showYouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@WilliamDavisMDBlog: WilliamDavisMD.comMembership website for two-way Zoom group meetings: InnerCircle.DrDavisInfiniteHealth.comBooks:Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose WeightWheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

The REAL way to stop or reverse heart disease

LDL cholesterol, apoprotein B, saturated fat, TMAO, statin cholesterol drugs: Over the last 40 years, we have been inundated with misguided advice on how to reduce your risk for coronary heart disease, i.e., risk for such things as heart attack, need for heart procedures such as stent implantation or bypass surgery, or sudden cardiac death, serious and often life-threatening events. Has it worked? 80 million Americans now take statin drugs to reduce cholesterol yet there has been no meaningful reduction in such events and, in fact, I’ll bet some of your local hospitals have added multi-million dollar wings for cardiac care, the number one moneymaker for hospitals and healthcare. The tragedy of all this is that the focus on issues like cholesterol have taken everyone’s focus off the REAL causes of heart disease that are, in reality, easy to identify and manage. And it involves no pharmaceuticals, no restriction of dietary fat, but draws from a handful of common sense and natural strategies that, time and again, have allowed people to stop or even reverse coronary atherosclerosis. _________________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here._____________________________________________________________________________MyReuteri and Gut to Glow can be found here: oxiceutics.comSupport the showYouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@WilliamDavisMDBlog: WilliamDavisMD.comMembership website for two-way Zoom group meetings: InnerCircle.DrDavisInfiniteHealth.comBooks:Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose WeightWheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

Will consuming any of these products change your life in any significant way? Will you be heathier, have better bowel health, skin health, metabolic health, mental health? Let’s discuss why, no, you will not experience any dramatic life-altering effects from consuming these products. Cold Water Immersion: Cardiac Russian Roulette

The practice of immersing your body in ice water is growing in popularity based on claims of improved mood and well-being, muscle recovery after exercise, even longevity. But this ignores the well-established fact that sudden cardiac death is a real risk due to coronary spasm, causing heart attack, and unstable heart rhythms due to a situation called autonomic conflict. There are a growing number of lawsuits that have been filed for the many sudden cardiac deaths that have occurred. So let’s discuss what we know about this concept of cold water immersion and why it is such a dangerous practice. • Immersion in water around 15°C/60°F triggers dangerous physiological responses• Cold exposure causes coronary arteries to spasm, potentially leading to heart attack• Most adults have some degree of endothelial dysfunction, making them vulnerable• "Autonomic conflict" occurs when both nervous system branches activate simultaneously• Multiple lawsuits have been filed over deaths from ice baths and polar plunges• Safer alternatives exist for achieving the claimed benefits of cold exposure• Cold showering (starting warm and gradually cooling) may offer similar benefits with less risk________________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here._____________________________________________________________________________MyReuteri and Gut to Glow can be found here: oxiceutics.comSupport the showYouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@WilliamDavisMDBlog: WilliamDavisMD.comMembership website for two-way Zoom group meetings: InnerCircle.DrDavisInfiniteHealth.comBooks:Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose WeightWheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

    Why Cutting Calories is Dangerous

Over 50% of Americans are, at any one time, trying to lose weight. So it’s understandable that the GLP-1 agonist drugs like Ozempic and Mounjaro have become so popular, given their spectacular upfront results. Others have used reduced calorie diets in their various forms: counting points, assigning foods red, yellow, or green lights, meal replacement products, etc. Or bariatric procedures like lap-band, jejunoileal bypass, or gastric bypass. But there is a lot that people are not told about these methods. The near-term prospect of losing weight is so enticing to people and so profitable to doctors, the healthcare system, and the pharmaceutical industry that is simply no incentive to tell you the full story. So let me fill you in on the real story, the full details about why cutting calories, regardless of the form it takes, can be so dangerous.

Dr. Eric Westman on the Power of Limiting Carbohydrates to Reverse Type 2 Diabetes; Cholesterol is not a disease

I first met Dr. Eric Westman at a low-carbohydrate meeting a number of years ago where he discussed an extremely important and insightful human clinical trial he had conducted in which he counseled participants with type 2 diabetes to follow a very low-carbohydrate, essentially ketogenic, diet. He was almost prohibited from conducted the study because some colleagues felt it was too dangerous. Nonetheless, the study was completed and demonstrated that type 2 diabetic participants no longer needed insulin and most diabetes drugs while achieving improved blood glucose measures by engaging in a lifestyle that was the direct opposite of conventional dietary advice. As groundbreaking as this study was for its time, it is simply not talked about enough, as it is one of the most important pieces of evidence that validates the idea that limiting carbohydrates and sugars, not fats or saturated fats, is key to, in this case, improving diabetes control, even helping make many people non-diabetic. I therefore thought it would be a good idea to ask Dr. Westman to describe his rationale for the study, discuss the results, and share the lessons he has learned since then. For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here._____________________________________________________________________________MyReuteri and Gut to Glow can be found here: oxiceutics.comSupport the showYouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@WilliamDavisMDBlog: WilliamDavisMD.comMembership website for two-way Zoom group meetings: InnerCircle.DrDavisInfiniteHealth.comBooks:Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose WeightWheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

Are health coaches the future of healthcare?

We all recognize that American healthcare is a badly broken system. Wildly overpriced, exploitative, with a focus on pharmaceuticals and medical procedures to the exclusion of basic issues such as nutrition, the role of nutrients, and the microbiome. Can we expect doctors, healthcare executives, pharma or medical device executives to find better solutions? I highly doubt it. One of the problems plaguing conventional delivery of healthcare is that doctors lack the time, knowledge, and frankly the interest in spending more time with their patients, hearing about their issues, then creating solutions that address their unique concerns. Enter the age of health coaches. A number of years ago, when I first heard about this phenomenon, of heath coaches playing a role in the delivery of health, I was skeptical. But over the past decade, as I’ve worked with health coaches, witnessed what they could accomplish, and heard plenty of positive feedback from the public engaging their services, my opinions about health coaching has completely changed. I now see them as part of the engine that will drive improvements in healthcare. I therefore tracked down Sandra Scheinbaum, a Phd clinical psychologist who counseled patients for many years but then diverted her career into functional medicine and health coaching, bringing the unique insights into human behavior and emotions that came from decades of practicing clinical psychology, now applied to health coaching. Dr. Scheinbaum founded the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy that educates and trains people in acquiring the skills and knowledge to practice as a health coach. She is also author of several books including Functional Medicine Coaching: Stories from the Movement That's Transforming Healthcare, and her newest book, Your Health Coach Will See You Now available in April 2025 on Amazon and selected bookstores. In this episode of Defiant Health, Dr. Scheinbaum recounts how she made this change in direction and what she foresees for the future of this important phenomenon of health coaching. For more information:FunctionalMedicineCoaching.org___________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go Support the showYouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@WilliamDavisMDBlog: WilliamDavisMD.comMembership website for two-way Zoom group meetings: InnerCircle.DrDavisInfiniteHealth.comBooks:Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose WeightWheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

Is blue light damaging your eyesight?

Over the past decade, most of us have converted our home lighting to light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs, as they save a significant amount of energy, requiring 75-90% less energy than older incandescent lights. Personally, I converted the 50 or lightbulbs in my house to nearly all LEDs.Most current LEDs emit, of course, visible light. But they also emit a significant amount of blue light and very little red and infrared (IR), in contrast to old-fashioned incandescent bulbs that emit some blue and a lot of red and IR. Remember when you had to change an incandescent bulb when it died? If you tried to unscrew it, it could burn your hand because the bulb was extremely hot. That’s the effect of red and IR that generates heat. Change a LED bulb and you can do so immediately, as the bulb is cool, even after dying just moments earlier. This is due to the absence of significant amounts of red and IR.While well-intended to save energy, it is now becoming clear that the wholesale conversion to blue-emitting LED lighting has been exerting adverse health effects, especially visual. So let’s begin talking about the role of light, specifically blue wavelengths in this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, then about the role of red and IR in a future episode. _______________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here._____________________________________________________________________________MyReuteri and Gut to Glow can be found here: oxiceutics.comSupport the showYouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@WilliamDavisMDBlog: WilliamDavisMD.comMembership website for two-way Zoom group meetings: InnerCircle.DrDavisInfiniteHealth.comBooks:Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose WeightWheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

Managing Endotoxemia: Key to SO Many Aspects of Health

I’ve touched on the topic of endotoxemia in past episodes of the Defiant Health podcast. In this episode, let’s dive deeper into this topic that is absolutely crucial to understanding and managing SO many aspects of health, from subduing anxiety and panic, to depressive, to joint pain and skin rashes, to gastrointestinal conditions, even weight management. What is endotoxemia? Fecal microbes, so-called Gram-negative species because of the way these microbes take up stain for examination under a microscope, species such as E. coli and Salmonella, have something called lipopolysaccharide endotoxin in their cells walls. Other species, so-called Gram positive species such as Enterococcus, Staphylococcus, and Streptococcus, that stain in a different manner, have something called lipoteichoic acid in their cell walls. When these microbes die, both Gram-negative and Gram-positive, these toxic factors are released into the intestines. If these fecal microbes are confined to the colon, where they belong, a section of GI tract adapted to their presence, the entry of these toxic components are limited and current evidence is unclear in how importat this process is. The real trouble occurs, however, when fecal microbes have invaded the 24-feet of small intestine, a process we label small intetinal bacterial overgrowth, or SIBO, because the small intestine—the stomach, duodenum, jejunum, and ileum are not well-adapted to the invasion of fecal species. Here, they die, release their toxic components, which then enter the bloodstream, the process labeled endotoxemia. People with SIBO therefore have high blood levels of endotoxin. This is how microbes in the GI Tract export their effects to other parts of the body. Let’s discuss this process and how you can take control over your emotions, mood, sleep, energy, weight, and numerous other aspects of health. _______________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go Support the showYouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@WilliamDavisMDBlog: WilliamDavisMD.comMembership website for two-way Zoom group meetings: InnerCircle.DrDavisInfiniteHealth.comBooks:Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose WeightWheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed
