El ADN de cada una de nuestras células mide cerca de dos metros de longitud, aunque la anchura de esta molécula es de solo dos milmillonésimas de metro ¿Cómo consiguen las células guardar en su interior una cadena tan larga y hacer accesible la información que lleva? El ADN puede guardarse dentro de una célula enrollado en ovillos formados por ocho proteínas centrales, denominadas histonas. Alrededor de ellas se enrollan algo menos de dos vueltas de hebra de ADN. Millones de estos pequeños ovillos, denominados nucleosomas, se empaquetan con otras proteínas en una estructura más densa, llamada cromatina, que forma los cromosomas. La lectura de la información tiene lugar en el espacio entre dos ovillos, un espacio que va variando porque el ADN enrollado en los nucleosomas se va deslizando y dejando expuestas distintas letras del código genético.
