Quando decisi di rievocarne le principali vicende, compresi che le opere di Bonhoeffer mi spingevano verso i luoghi in cui lui era vissuto. Ho cercato a Roma i riscontri del viaggio che Dietrich compì insieme al fratello Klaus. Sono stato nelle case aristocratiche che lo videro crescere. Ho voluto conoscere le chiese nere di Harlem, tappa decisiva per la sua formazione. Mi sono aggirato fra le dune sabbiose di Zingst sul Mar Baltico e i calcinac­ci di Finkenwalde, in Polonia. Ho visitato l’abbazia di Ettal, in Baviera. Ho raggiunto il patibolo di Flossenburg. […] Dietrich Bonhoeffer, un uomo che non ha esitato a misurarsi con le tragedie della storia e la cui vita rappresenta, ancora oggi, una ragione di speranza per mol­ti in ogni parte del mondo».
