Dignity, Duty, and the Shrewd Manager: Deuteronomy 21–22 and Luke 16 (Day 104)

from The Bible in a Year Podcast with Scott Purcell

How does our private integrity affect our public community? Today in Deuteronomy, we look at a series of civil laws that might seem strange at first, but each points to a deep concern for justice, family order, and the protection of the vulnerable. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus tells the puzzling but powerful Parable of the Shrewd Manager. He uses a story of a failing steward to teach a radical lesson: use the resources of this world to invest in the next, because you cannot serve both God and money.Today’s Scripture:📖 Deuteronomy 21–22 – This section covers everything from the atonement for unsolved murders and the treatment of female captives to the rights of the firstborn and laws concerning domestic morality. We also see the famous command to help a neighbor’s fallen ox, emphasizing that we are responsible for the welfare of those around us.📖 Luke 16:1–18 – Jesus teaches on stewardship through the Shrewd Manager, concluding that "he who is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much." He confronts the Pharisees, who were "lovers of money," and reaffirms the permanence of God's Law and the sanctity of marriage.📖 Proverbs 9:13–18 – We move from the feast of Wisdom to the house of "Woman Folly." She is loud and seductive, offering "stolen water" and "bread eaten in secret," but leading her guests straight to the depths of Sheol.RESOURCES & READ-ALONG 📺 Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYKi8-_5xHGL_nFAZOthHtZhcb4CqW4ZF 📖 Follow the Text (LEB): https://biblia.com/books/leb/ 🗓️ Download the Full Plan: https://www.biblica.com/resources/reading-plans/CONNECT & SUPPORT 📧 Questions?
