Robert Southwell was an English Catholic priest. He was also well known as a poet and missionary in the post-reformation UK. In 1595, Southwell was hanged drawn and quartered after he was convicted of high treason for his links to the Holy See. In 1970 he was canonised by Pope Paul VI as one of the Forty Martyrs.
