Dode koolmezen in de blender voor onderzoek naar bestrijdingsmiddelen

Bestrijdingsmiddelen zijn niet meer weg te denken uit ons leven. In rap tempo verschijnen er verschillende soorten op de markt om ons voedsel tegen schimmels en insecten te beschermen. Ook in letterlijk zin zijn ze niet meer weg te denken: vaak zijn ze moeilijk afbreekbaar en verspreiden ze zich ver voorbij de plek waar ze in eerste instantie zijn gebruikt. Zelfs tot in jouw lichaam, ons grondwater, je slaapkamer en de dieren om ons heen. 🩻 Dat verdient dringend onze aandacht. We weten namelijk niet zeker wat die duizenden soorten bestrijdingsmiddelen met onze gezondheid en die van ons milieu aan het doen zijn. Maar sterke vermoedens, die zijn er meer dan genoeg. Hoogste tijd dus, om... koolmezen in de blender te doen? 🐥 Ja: je leest het goed. In een lab in Leiden zijn onderzoekers dagelijks dode koolmezen aan het blenderen, met het doel om de verspreiding van bestrijdingsmiddelen over Nederland in kaart te brengen. Honderden burgerwetenschappers uit heel Nederland hebben daarvoor vrijwillig duizenden dode, jonge koolmeesjes opgestuurd naar het lab. Verslaggever Syb Faes wil weten wat er precies in dat lab gebeurt en loopt mee met eindverantwoordelijke van het onderzoek Peter Lindenburg. Daarbij leerde hij: hoe gruwelijk het ook klinkt, wat er met de koolmezen gebeurt is van enorm belang... 👨‍🔬 Peter Lindenburg is lector analytical biosciences bij het Leiden Centre for Applied Bioscience van de Hogeschool Leiden. Hij en zijn team jonge onderzoekers hebben al talloze opvallende onderzoeken uitgevoerd. Zo zijn ook neushoorndrollen en mensenpoep in de blender beland voor de analytische chemie.
