Does Your Website Really Drive Visibility? Plus, How to Find Clients That Matter

from Sales For The Nigerian Business Person: The Sales and Marketing Blueprint · host Tavershima Ayede

Recently, I received a WhatsApp message that sparked a thought-provoking conversation. It went something like this: "I came across your business on Google and really liked what you offer. I noticed you don’t have a website yet, and I wanted to ask—have you considered having one to increase your online presence?" My immediate response was, "No." And that got me thinking. The core benefit being sold here was "increased visibility." But is that the true Unique Value Proposition (UVP) of a website? The Myth of Automatic Visibility Many believe that simply having a website guarantees visibility. However, the reality is far more nuanced. A static website, left to its own devices, won't magically attract hordes of customers. True visibility comes from strategic Search Engine Optimization (SEO). This involves: * Technical SEO: Ensuring your website's infrastructure is sound (meta data, sitemaps, etc.). * On-Page SEO: Creating valuable, keyword-rich content that resonates with your target audience. In essence, a website must be a dynamic, evolving resource, and a hub for your content marketing strategy! For me, my podcast and radio show have been far more effective in driving attention and engagement. When a Website Does Matter Don't get me wrong, websites are powerful tools. When I do eventually create one, it will be focused on lead generation, capturing contact details of potential clients ready for business conversations. Beyond the Website: Smart Prospecting This interaction also highlighted a crucial aspect of service provision: how to identify and reach out to viable prospects. The person who contacted me found my outdated Google My Business profile, which listed my services as photography and video. While I still engage in these areas for corporate clients and documentaries, my primary focus has shifted to consulting and speaking. This underscores the importance of thorough research. Instead of relying on stale information, service providers should seek out businesses with active online traction and demonstrate how their solutions can fuel further growth. Identifying Buying Signals For website developers, recognizing "buying signals" is essential. These include: Website-Related Signals: * Outdated design and poor mobile responsiveness. * Slow loading speeds and frequent errors. * Lack of essential functionalities (contact forms, e-commerce). * Security vulnerabilities. Business-Related Signals: * New business launches and rebranding efforts. * Expansion into new markets and increased social media activity. Key Takeaways: * A website alone doesn't guarantee visibility. SEO and consistent content creation are crucial. * Effective prospecting involves identifying businesses with existing online traction and demonstrating how your services can enhance their growth. * Look for buying signals, don't just reach out to anyone. Don't just grab business names from a website and assume they'll be a good candidate for your product/ service. Let's move beyond the myth of automatic website visibility and focus on building genuine connections and providing real value. #website #seo #marketing #prospecting #businessdevelopment #contentmarketing
