Domestic Violence During Pregnancy: Warning Signs & How to Help

from Birth, Baby! | Guidance for Pregnancy, Birth, Postpartum, and Parenting · host Birth, Baby! Podcast

Pregnancy is often seen as a time of joy, but for many, it can also be a time of increased vulnerability and risk. In this powerful and eye-opening conversation, Ciarra sits down with Laramie Gorbett, an expert in domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking, to unpack the realities of abuse during pregnancy. Together, they explore how relationship dynamics can shift, the warning signs that are often overlooked, and how friends, family members, and birth workers can safely offer support. This episode is a must-listen for anyone who wants to better understand how to recognize abuse, support survivors, and help create safer, more informed communities. Laramie Gorbett, M.A., brings more than two decades of experience working alongside survivors of gender-based violence in both domestic and international contexts. A recognized subject matter expert in domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking, she has dedicated her career to advancing trauma-informed, survivor-centered care. Laramie holds a Master's degree in Anthropology with a minor in Gender Studies, and a certification in Nonprofit Leadership & Management. Her leadership spans regional and statewide coalitions and task forces, and she has presented at national conferences on best practices in survivor services. She currently serves at SAFE Alliance, where she works to secure funding in support of survivors' complex and multifaceted needs. Laramie is both an activist and an advocate and is deeply committed to justice, healing, and the transformative power of art.
