DON’T THROW YOUR HELMET

Proverbs 14:29"People with understanding control their anger; a hot temper shows great foolishness." Are you watching the game tonight?That question has been opening conversations between men for generations. Monday Night Football used to feel stitched into the American male identity. For young me, knowing the teams, players and what happened Sunday could tell folks whether you were really inside the culture—or just a fair-weather fan.For some of us, fandom carried competition, belonging—even masculinity.Even now, when I'm driving Uber, "You watching the game tonight?" can turn two strangers into old teammates before the next traffic light.Sports give us common ground. But they also show how quickly a group can lose its head.One bad call, one ugly play, one opponent celebrating too long—and suddenly grown men are ready to throw a helmet, a remote control and all their good sense.Listen to Proverbs 14:29 in the NLT:"People with understanding control their anger; a hot temper shows great foolishness."That word picture gets me. A hot-tempered person may think they look strong, but they're putting their foolishness on the big screen where everybody can see it.And that matters far beyond football.At family gatherings, work meetings, in ministry and in the group chat, reactive emotion creates a fog. One person gets loud. Somebody else matches that energy. Then everybody starts responding to the atmosphere instead of what actually happened.Patience isn't passivity. It's not suppressed anger or letting people get over on you.Biblical patience creates enough Spirit-shaped space to see what's really happening before emotion takes over the playbook.You've got to learn how to read the room without letting the room rewrite you.What actually happened?What part belongs to me?Am I responding to this person—or to the pressure spreading through the group?See, the Holy Spirit doesn't make us emotionless. The Spirit teaches us to carry what we feel without letting it carry us somewhere wisdom never intended.So before you throw your helmet (or your remote), call a timeout.Feel what you feel. Name it honestly.
