from Born to Talk Radio Show · host Born to Talk Radio Show

Thank you, Dr. Andrew Newberg, MD for joining me on the Born To Talk Radio Show Podcast. Dr. Newberg is a Neuroscientist and Professor and Research Director at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health at Thomas Jefferson University and Hospital in Philadelphia.                 Brain Weaver.  Creating the Fabric for a Healthy Mind through Integrative Medicine.  In his book, Andrew tells us how to integrate modern medical science with innovative healing arts that have been confirmed by the most recent scientific evidence. This is a book you will want to follow by taking his lead and following the questions. In our podcast, you will be hearing about optimal brain health. Here is how Andrew defines this in 4 dimensions as he described, as pillars.  They are all equally important. Biological.  To support our brain as best as possible by avoiding toxins, being cautious of physical injuries, and brain-stimulating activities. Psychological.  Incorporate stress reduction into our daily lives. This could include focusing on the positive with gratitude and compassion. Social.  During this time of social distancing, we need to find creative ways to engage with others.  How many of us use zoom now? This past year, for many of us, we’ve had too much isolation. Having a strong support network is important. Spiritual Health.  We may find our spirituality in religious traditions, meditation, nature, or whatever feels sacred. It is important to find our own ways of balancing these dimensions so that they contribute to our health and well-being. The Takeaways! The most important highlights from Brain Weaver is to try to make and keep our brain as healthy as possible for as long as possible. Andrew recommends the following: “It is important to take stock of your own strengths and weaknesses. It is important to find ways of utilizing your strengths as best as possible and minimizing or even improving upon areas where you might have weaknesses.” “Eating a healthy diet that is plant-based, protein-based, and as natural as possible reduces inflammation and provides the necessary nutrients for a healthy brain.” “Creating an effective sleep program is essential for good brain health as well as making sure you get a lot of good aerobic exercise.” “Engaging your spiritual side is essential and can be in the form of traditional religions as well as secular approaches such as yoga, mindfulness, being in nature, or creative outlets.” In closing, there are many other integrative approaches discussed in Brain Weaver that can be helpful for people dealing with neurological or psychological problems as well as those who have a healthy brain and want to keep it healthy. I highly recommend you check out his book, you can follow this link.   A meaningful word for me during this podcast is Balance.   Thank you Andrew for this informative show and your expertise.
